West Hampstead Women’s Centre (WHWC) has provided a supportive, women only space since 1984. Building a brighter future for women, giving women the opportunity to thrive.
In 2014, VAC supported WHWC to gain a Quality Mark in Investors In People. Beguna Blanco, WHWC Crisis Worker, talks about the impact this has made on the orgnaisation.
“Because of the climate at the moment of how difficult it is to get funding, we thought it would be a good idea to have a recognised quality mark.
We hoped this would show that we do good quality work, and maybe that will give a bit more of a chance to get funding. Going for a quality mark is a long process!! I didn’t know anything about the quality marks and so VAC came to our meetings a couple of times. We looked at the various systems and in the end the Executive Committee decided we should go for Investors In People.
VAC were very helpful about telling us what this particular quality mark would cover so that we could navigate around the system to see if it was appropriate for our needs as a smaller organisation. Each time I had a big list of questions for VAC…. what is this, what is this etc.?! When we thought we had everything ready VAC came and checked everything and said we could go for the mark as we were well prepared. So we went for the mark and got it in May 2014!
I think what the award will do is definitely help us to improve that we demonstrate social value, because the IIP mark is about the way that you treat your people, how best you utilise the human resources that you have and how you develop the staff and volunteers to better the organisation, and support the members and the users of the centre. We are investing in people, we do care about our staff and volunteers and we want the best of them. This is all about sharing the knowledge and helping each other, training etc. and IIP demonstrates that this is what we are doing – the culture of supporting each other.
We are definitely going to use it as part of our funding applications and will certainly communicate to our existing funders that we have received the IIP quality mark.
