VAC Autumn Update to Members and Subscribers

Autumn 2019 Update to Members and Subscribers

25th October 2019

Space to Connect

We are taking part in the Coop Foundation’s enquiry to help community organisations identify, improve and protect spaces where people can connect and co-operate. This is part of a national debate on public realm being led by DCMS, The Coop Foundation and Locality.  Over the next 6 months we will start exploring ways that local challenges could be addressed through better use of space, and/or identify potential spaces that could be opened up to community use. To kick off this initiative we are holding an initial event on 19th November (12 – 2pm) to gather ideas and prioritise areas to take forward.
More info and booking at Eventbrite.

Trustee’s Week

Trustees’ Week is celebrated each year in the first week of November (4th – 9th).  It’s a chance for trustees and chairs to come together to learn, share and network.  VAC and VCC have arranged a full programme for Camden trustees:
Learn about the Trustees’ role in safeguarding on 6th November 2-5pm.
There will also be an update on the major changes in the health service that are currently underway on 7th November at 5.30 with special guest speakers.  Book your free place at Eventbrite.
Trustees can access resources from VAC, join the Camden Trustees Meetup group and get information on recruitment from VCC.

Rents Review update

VAC is taking part in meetings with the council and others to look at VCS rents and leases.  As rent values in central London soar,  the council’s policy of applying market rents to community assets has come under scrutiny.  Even with a  discount rents are becoming unaffordable for many in the sector and there is a knock on effect to those who need to rent space in community buildings to run their activities.  Social Value is a way of taking some of the ‘rent’ as exchange for the social good that the users of the building create.  Some simple measures of social value will need to be developed along with a set of basic principles. The proposals generated will go to Cabinet in the new year and we have pressed for the sector to have a say before any final decision is taken.

Social Prescribing Learning Network (SPLN) Event

The next SPLN event is on funding for VCSE  providers of social prescribing activities on 28th November. Places will be limited and focused on some Camden priorities and key themes and areas where there will be increasing demand from social prescription referrals.

Full details in the SPLN mailout next week.  If you are not on that mailing list you can join using this link (Scroll down, fill in form and tick the box for VAC and / or SPLN mailing as required.)

VCS Infrastructure Funding

In April the council announced a 2 year package of spending on VCS infrastructure in the borough.  We’ve summarised  what each organisation is doing for the money and how those organisations are working together here.

Finally, if you haven’t done so already, please fill in our survey. It’s only a short survey but we really value your views and it will help us shape our work in the future – and you could win £100!

Yours

Kevin & the VAC team: Alex, Dianne, Donna, Hasel, Mandira, Manuella, Nasrin, Ricky and Zubair

PS We’re planning our Annual Conference & AGM in February – more details soon
