VAC AGM “The Future of Health and Social Care”
testVoluntary Action Camden’s AGM; “The Future of Health and Social Care”
Monday 13th February 5.30 – 8 at Arlington Conference Centre, 220 Arlington Road, London NW1
The future of health and social care services is of interest to many Camden residents. The contribution of the voluntary and community sector to the delivery of health and social care services is changing and the sector in turn relies heavily on the input and support of local residents and communities. All these elements are key to the future quality of life in Camden.
At the AGM on Monday 13th February VAC will be hosting a debate on “The Future of Health and Social Care and the Role of the Voluntary and Community Sector”. This will be a broad ranging debate looking at traditional models of service delivery through to community provided, co-produced support and the role of informal community networks. The debate will also look at the role of volunteering in providing support and as a route to paid employment.
Guest speakers are Doctor Caz Sayer, the Chair of the Camden Clinical Commissioning Group and Cllr Georgia Gould, the Cabinet member for Young People, Adults and Health.

Charities call for the same tax concessions as businesses, ahead of Budget
A coalition of nine charity infrastructure bodies has written to the Chancellor Philip Hammond calling for a range of measures to match tax concessions being giving to the private sector.
One of these is increasing business rates relief to 100 per cent. The letter, which was coordinated by the Charity Finance Group (CFG) ahead of next month’s Budget, says that businesses have benefited from a £6.7bn rates cut which will see some businesses paying no rates at all. Businesses now get more favourable treatment on National Insurance, as well as the long standing problem of VAT – which is irrecoverable by charities and costs the sector £1.5bn a year. Details in Civil Society. The demands are contained in a letter that urges the government to deal with the sector in a more strategic way as opposed to the distribution of £0.5bn of libor fines that have been distributed by the treasury in a completely opaque way to a handful of charities. Full story in Third Sector.

Minister tries again to revive Social Value Act
The minister for civil society has announced that there will be another review of the Social Value Act.
Speaking at Social Enterprise UK’s Social Value Summit earlier this week, Rob Wilson said that a review will be looking at the next stage for the act and will involve roundtable discussions with “those leading the way on social value”.
Wilson said: “The Social Value Act all gives us an opportunity to collectively make things better. It gives public sector organisations the chance to achieve so much more with tax payers’ money.”
He added: “Sometimes they, and commissioners, need a bit of help so we want to work with you to explore the next phase of implementing the Social Value Act and deliver even more benefit.
“My priority is two-fold, first a public sector that is a catalyst for innovation and gets much more social-impact for every single pound that we spend. Second, a small charity and social enterprise sector that is thriving, competing effectively and being recognised for the additional benefits and huge impact that they both deliver.” Full story at Civil Society.
