In at the deep end

Ann Wolfe, Community Development Worker at VAC writes about her work:
I remember it well – the first time I ever ran a workshop for Voluntary Action Camden. The pounding heart, dry mouth, shaking hands. What if I forget what I want to say? What if my mind goes totally blank? What if..?
Several years on and some 50 or so workshops later, talking to a group of people no longer reduces me to a state of terror. It’s just part of my job, something I find rewarding and, dare I say it, even enjoyable.
But on this chilly February afternoon at a community venue near Kings Cross (Our Camden) I’m here to give moral and practical support to Yvonne, one of our volunteer Mental Health Champions. Click here to read on.

Government ‘pausing on implementation’ of anti-advocacy clause
The government has said it is “pausing on implementation” of the anti-advocacy clause, which will restrict organisations that receive taxpayers’ money from lobbying government. See Civil Society

Who is really in charge at the Charity Commission?
Civil Society have a fascinating expose of the web of think tanks, academics, special advisers and others connected to those in positions of power at the Charity Commission.

UN expert condemns UK government’s anti-charity approach
Anti-charity measures adopted by the government could have serious ramifications around the world, if adopted by “less democratic nations” who view the British charity sector as an exemplary model, a UN representative said yesterday.
Speaking at the Foreign Press Association, the UN special rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, said Britain’s charity sector was a “national treasure” and the many individuals working for it, the “reason for many of the positive attributes enjoyed in this country”. Full story in Civil Society.

Shawcross Embraces Charitable Advocacy – Three Years Late
After three long years of negativism about charities’ political activity, the Chairman of the Charity Commission has suddenly embraced the vital role of charities in democratic debate and decision-making. Why? Another fascinating article from former charity commissioner, Andrew Purkis, available on his blog.

Moneytalk Camden North – subsidised Financial Education Facilitator Training, 27/28 April or 18 & 25 May
Moneytalk Camden North is a new project based on the award winning financial literacy resource Made of Money, developed by anti-poverty charity Quaker Social Action. It aims to help groups talk about money and its impact on their lives, as well as learn vital money management skills.
Moneytalk Camden North takes a different and innovative approach to financial literacy: it works holistically- with the whole person and the whole household. The resources aim to build confidence, resilience and help people identify their own values, attitudes and emotions around money, as well as covering basics like budgeting, borrowing and debt. The resources are all provided, fully reusable, fun and informative- so it hardly feels like you are doing money training. We will train you to use the resources and approach to support your own client groups.
This is a two year project and we are running our first 2-day comprehensive trainings for you on 27/28 April and 18 & 25 May click here to find out more and download a booking form. Contact: mtcn@qsa.org.uk tel: 020 8983 5047

Are you looking to employ an assistant to help with your care needs? CamdenPAs can help you.
CamdenPAs.org.uk is a new service that makes it easy to find a personal assistant (PA) and puts you in control of your care and support.
If you have care needs, you can employ a PA to help you to live as independently as possible.

When you find a match you can contact the PA to arrange an interview and see how you get on. If you like them you can then work out contract details such as hours, duties and wages, and hire them.
If you do not find anyone suitable, you can set up your own a profile describing your requirements and interests, for PAs to look through and contact you.
