How should Camden tackle crime & antisocial behaviour?
Camden Council currently spends £5 million on reducing crime and antisocial behaviour in the Borough. They need to cut this expenditure by 25%. To make this level of reduction they have rethought how they might deliver community safety in Camden. They are proposing to prioritise those most vulnerable in society and who are most at risk of harm. Camden is keen to hear from you and is undertaking a consultation that runs until Tuesday 12 July.
For further information and a copy of the consultation document: HERE
There are several ways you can tell the Council your views:
• Online: www.camden.gov.uk/communitysafetyreview
• Email: communitysafety@camden.gov.uk
• Or call Community Safety on 020 7974 2915
If you want to learn more about the proposed changes, talk with Community Safety officers and have your say, Camden Safer Neighbourhood Board, is holding a special Community Conversation on Thursday 30 June, 7.00 pm, Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9BD. If you are interested in attending please let Peter Ward know: admin@camdensnb.org.uk

National

Why infrastructure support matters
NPC makes the case for local infrastructure.
“‘Everybody wants what we do, but nobody wants to pay for it.’ This is a lament frequently made by voluntary sector infrastructure organisations. The smaller or less experienced organisations most likely to benefit from their services are often those least able to afford it. Local authorities-struggling to fund core statutory duties let alone anything else besides-are cutting back support and/or narrowing the terms of what it should provide. Individual and institutional funders, meanwhile, often want to channel their support ‘to the frontline’.
What infrastructure bodies can offer
For charities, the benefits are obvious: access to information, advice, training, and even professional services that cannot be provided in-house. Effective infrastructure bodies are also a channel of communication. They can act as conduit between the voluntary and statutory sectors, feeding intelligence both ways and helping the two to work better together.
For communities, the benefits are indirect; they stem from the effects that a vibrant, confident, well supported voluntary sector can have on individuals and neighbourhoods.
For funders, the benefits are less obvious, but no less useful. The availability of support and guidance from infrastructure organisations can lead to much better funding applications from a wider range of organisations.

Should the term asset map be put into room 101?
Whilst the process and practice of asset mapping is an essential community building method, the term is beginning to blur with various different forms of data gathering and analysis; such as where local people can access services. Does this miss the point?
An excellent read over at nurturedevelopment.org

Charities minister’s astonishing claim
NAVCA has reacted with dismay as Charities Minister Rob Wilson’s comment that “too many charities are reliant on grants from the public sector, a way of working that is simply unsustainable in the long term.”
Neil Cleeveley, NAVCA’s Chief Executive, said:
“I’m astonished that the minister who ought to be charities’ advocate in government could come out with such nonsense. If you unpack this comment – what does it actually mean? Is he saying that charities with a substantial grant to support people and communities should reject it? Or that charities doing vital work that does not attract individual donations are bad or failing? Why should grants be any more unsustainable than any other form of funding?”
Other sector leaders responded in a similar manner. Jay Kennedy, Head of Policy at the Directory of Social Change, said: “The comments are phenomenally unhelpful. What evidence is he basing his statements on?” Asheem Singh, Head of Policy at Acevo, said: “The Minister has got this one wrong. Grants work because they involve charities in the development of outcomes.”

Call for annual social value statements
New research by SEUK has been published into local authority take up of social value. The research, Procuring for Good, shows that only one in three councils routinely consider social value in commissioning.
Neil Cleeveley, said; “We have previously called for all statutory bodies covered by the Social Value Act to be required to produce annual statements setting out their approach to social value and the effect it has had.”

Moneytalk Camden North – subsidised Financial Education Facilitator Training Course, 12/13 July or 3 & 10 November
Moneytalk Camden North is a new project based on the award winning financial literacy resource Made of Money, developed by anti-poverty charity Quaker Social Action. It aims to help groups talk about money and its impact on their lives, as well as learn vital money management skills.
Moneytalk Camden North takes a different and innovative approach to financial literacy: it works holistically- with the whole person and the whole household. The resources aim to build confidence, resilience and help people identify their own values, attitudes and emotions around money, as well as covering basics like budgeting, borrowing and debt. We recognise that unless people’s own situations are explored and confidence is increased, behaviour will not change long–term. The resources are all provided, fully reusable, fun and informative- so it hardly feels like you are doing money training. We will train you to use the resources and approach to support your own client groups.
12th & 13th July and 3rd & 10th November click here to find out more and download a booking form.

Are you looking to employ an assistant to help with your care needs? CamdenPAs can help
CamdenPAs.org.uk is a new service that makes it easy to find a personal assistant (PA) and puts you in control of your care and support.
If you have care needs, you can employ a PA to help you to live as independently as possible.
CamdenPAs features an online ‘marketplace’ for you to browse through a list of profiles of PAs in the borough. Profiles give details about the services they provide, their skills, experience and personal interests.
You can look through the list to find suitable matches and choose someone you like to help support you.
When you find a match you can contact the PA to arrange an interview and see how you get on. If you like them you can then work out contract details such as hours, duties and wages, and hire them.
If you do not find anyone suitable, you can set up your own a profile describing your requirements and interests, for PAs to look through and contact you.
You can employ a PA whether you receive a direct payment or fund your own care. If you receive direct payments you can get support with the employment from Personalised Support In Camden or AgeUK Camden.
Become a PA
If you’re a PA looking for work or are just starting out, CamdenPAs can help you. As well as helping you finding a job, the site features advice on looking for work, becoming a PA and where to get training.

A call for Expressions of Interest to run a new community space at King’s Cross
The heart of King’s Cross is one of the most exciting places to be in central London. This part of the capital has become a vibrant mix of new homes, offices, public spaces, with a range of cultural and education organisations enriching the neighbourhood. It is estimated that 20,000 people now spend their work, home or leisure time in the area.
To cater for the growing community, a new purpose-built facility has been built in the heart of the main residential neighbourhood, in The Plimsoll Building, which is also the site of two schools, with apartments above. It is expected that the occupier of the new facility will work with the Council and residents, businesses, and other local interests in making this new space a busy, accessible, inviting amenity with a range of activities for the local population.
Due to the facility’s central location, Camden-wide services will also be considered as long as need is evidenced in your expression of interest.
The new facility is 370sqm (3,700 sqft) and includes a meeting hall, a meeting room, a multi-faith room, a kitchen, reception area and office. It has been provided by King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership, the developer of King’s Cross Central, and leased to Camden Council.
The ideal tenant will have a clear strategy to promote the facility to the local community, will provide or enable activities, manage bookings and availability, and be responsible for all running costs – including utilities, rates, repairs and maintenance, and service charges. Notwithstanding these costs, the occupation of space will be offered on a peppercorn lease basis by the Council.
The tenant(s) could be arts focussed, education focussed and/or community focussed, but it is essential that the tenant(s) understand the needs of the community and are able to develop and deliver high quality facilities and services to address these needs.
We will consider innovative models to run the centre such as cross sector partnerships and consortia as long as there is a lead or accountable body that is defined as ‘not-for-profit’.
You will need to submit an Expression of Interest. A form for this is available by emailing both jeff.hopwood@camden.gov.uk AND adam.demosthenous@camden.gov.uk. (Please use both email addresses to ensure a response.)
The closing date for expressions of interest is 15th July 2016.

Mapping social prescribing in London
As part of our Regional Voices’ strategic partnership work, LVSC is mapping social prescribing activities in London. We will continue to update the map every quarter over the coming year.
The map includes links to social prescribing activities in London. Each link takes you to a uniquely created page with information about and contact details of each social prescriber.
We are also working with Healthy London Partnership (HLP) to take this work forward across London. We will look at best practice and different models of social prescribing activities in London.
The map will be widely shared with the VCSE (voluntary, community and social enterprise) sector in London. We will also share it at a strategic level with commissioners, NHS England (including HLP), London Health Board, Public Health England, local authorities, Social Prescribing Network and academic institutions that are reviewing and evaluating social prescribing activities.
If you are a social prescriber, you are cordially invited to complete our survey which will inform your unique page on the map. It will also provide useful information for our work with HLP.
If you know of other and emerging social prescribing initiatives not listed on the map, please email me: sandra@lvsc.org.uk. Access the new social prescribing map in London online here
