SPACE TO CONNECT
Space to Connect is a collaboration with the Cooperative Foundation and VCS organisations across England to support community groups struggling to access affordable space.
The programme began with local research and exploration projects, and then moved into an action phase. VAC’s exploration project focussed on the costs of hiring rooms and spaces in Camden, and looked at creative community initiatives to increase useable space. Projects included innovative developments in tenants halls, and using outdoor spaces, including street spaces, differently. In 2020 Covid 19 the project embraced the accelerated the use of virtual spaces, made use of streets viable through closures, and presented the new challenge of developing ‘covid safe ‘spaces.
A key outcome of VAC’s work on community space is a collaboration with Google to pay for community groups to hire rooms in local community buildings, and access technical support.
