Feature
Give and Gain – being a volunteer

Volunteers’ Week starts next week and to celebrate our Health Advocate Volunteer, Mandira Manandhar, shares her own experiences of volunteering.
With my experience being a volunteer previously, I believe it is a great way to use your free time to learn, gain experience, upgrade skills and to meet new people (expanding your network).
Before you start volunteering, it is very important to understand the expectations of the position. Sometimes you may find volunteering is not as useful and productive as you expected it to be and remember it is a volunteer role not a job. Sometimes I have questioned myself. Am I learning anything or is what I’m doing going to help me get anywhere, but I have pushed that aside and looked to the positive side. I have thought about what’s going well and working rather than thinking about what’s not. Read the rest of the article on the VAC website.

Creating Connections 11
Wednesday 8th June 2016 5.30pm to 7.30pm
University College London, UCL Quad Pavilion, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT.
Creating Connections is our regular networking event that brings together University College London staff and postgraduate students with representatives from community organisations, charities, residents’ groups, social enterprises and statutory organisations. The evening is a mixture of themed discussions in small groups with more informal hob-nobbing; the aim is to find areas of common interest and collaborative working.
The June event will be co-organised with the Knowledge Quarter – a network of over 65 academic, cultural, research, scientific and media organisations situated within a one mile radius of King’s Cross. We’ll be welcoming representatives from the Knowledge Quarter’s member organisations.
Each Creating Connections has a number of discussion themes, intended as a starting point for sharing ideas and making those connections. June’s event will be of particular value to anyone interested in the following topics:
~ The Knowledge Quarter
~ Digital Health
~ Behaviour Change
~ Modern slavery and trafficking
~ Community research, academic research
~ Libraries
Note that the event is a short networking event for people interested in these issues – a starting point for finding like-minded people you might want to collaborate with. It’s intended for experts, beginners and everyone in between. It’s not a conference and there won’t be speeches or workshops!
Register here by Friday 3rd June
If you’ve any questions, please feel free to email John Braime

Upcoming Medicine for Members Event: Mental Health in a Primary Care Setting

The topic will be ‘Mental Health in a Primary Care Setting’ and we will be focusing on the innovative work being done by our teams of psychologists and psychiatrists. They have been working alongside GPs in their practices, enabling individuals to get access to expert mental healthcare closer to home and in a friendly and familiar environment.
Our panel of guests will include Dr David Davies, an Islington GP; Andy Stopher, Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Emily Van de Pol, Interim Divisional Director for Primary Mental Healthcare.

FYA crowdfunding campaign has raised £2600 so far
However to achieve our goal of £25,000, your help is vital!
For our young people, FYA’s football programmes bring benefits way beyond the sport itself. They provide the gateway to opportunities like our peer education and healthy living projects, youth-led community festivals, sports programmes, mentoring and work experience opportunities.
Visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk/FYA and help us create social change through football!
Any amount you can give, big or small, all helps to make a huge difference.

Choosing the right charity bank account
Scotland’s Third Force News has a comparison chart to answer the question “What’s the best bank account for your charity?”. The information is all applicable to England.
There’s a graphical version on Third Force News itself, with a text based format on SCVO’s pages.
TFN also extracts five top tips on choosing a bank from ‘Banking for charities’ published a few months ago by the Scottish charity regulator OSCR.
One notable omission is Metro Bank – currently only in south east England. Several London CVS’s give their charity account a good review.
Thanks to Voluntary News for this story.

Small grants and Large grants are available to not-for-profit organisations in the UK that are supporting children and young people of 18 years and under who are experiencing disadvantage through illness, disability, deprivation etc.
Organisations must be working to combat this disadvantage and to make a real difference to children and young people’s lives.

~ Small Grants of up to £10,000 can support projects for one year.
The grants are to be used for direct project costs that relate clearly and directly to a project. These can include salaries, volunteer expenses, building hire costs and travel costs. In many cases project costs also include less delivery-focused aspects such as line management, administration, insurance and utilities.
Deadlines for Small Grant applications: 1 June, 1 September, and 1 December.

Moneytalk Camden North – subsidised Financial Education Facilitator Training Course, 12/13 July or 3 & 10 November
Moneytalk Camden North is a new project based on the award winning financial literacy resource Made of Money, developed by anti-poverty charity Quaker Social Action. It aims to help groups talk about money and its impact on their lives, as well as learn vital money management skills.
Moneytalk Camden North takes a different and innovative approach to financial literacy: it works holistically- with the whole person and the whole household. The resources aim to build confidence, resilience and help people identify their own values, attitudes and emotions around money, as well as covering basics like budgeting, borrowing and debt. We recognise that unless people’s own situations are explored and confidence is increased, behaviour will not change long–term. The resources are all provided, fully reusable, fun and informative- so it hardly feels like you are doing money training. We will train you to use the resources and approach to support your own client groups.

Are you looking to employ an assistant to help with your care needs? CamdenPAs can help
CamdenPAs.org.uk is a new service that makes it easy to find a personal assistant (PA) and puts you in control of your care and support.
If you have care needs, you can employ a PA to help you to live as independently as possible.
CamdenPAs features an online ‘marketplace’ for you to browse through a list of profiles of PAs in the borough. Profiles give details about the services they provide, their skills, experience and personal interests.
You can look through the list to find suitable matches and choose someone you like to help support you.
When you find a match you can contact the PA to arrange an interview and see how you get on. If you like them you can then work out contract details such as hours, duties and wages, and hire them.
If you do not find anyone suitable, you can set up your own a profile describing your requirements and interests, for PAs to look through and contact you.
You can employ a PA whether you receive a direct payment or fund your own care. If you receive direct payments you can get support with the employment from Personalised Support In Camden or AgeUK Camden.
Become a PA
If you’re a PA looking for work or are just starting out, CamdenPAs can help you. As well as helping you finding a job, the site features advice on looking for work, becoming a PA and where to get training.

A call for Expressions of Interest to run a new community space at King’s Cross
The heart of King’s Cross is one of the most exciting places to be in central London. This part of the capital has become a vibrant mix of new homes, offices, public spaces, with a range of cultural and education organisations enriching the neighbourhood. It is estimated that 20,000 people now spend their work, home or leisure time in the area.
To cater for the growing community, a new purpose-built facility has been built in the heart of the main residential neighbourhood, in The Plimsoll Building, which is also the site of two schools, with apartments above. It is expected that the occupier of the new facility will work with the Council and residents, businesses, and other local interests in making this new space a busy, accessible, inviting amenity with a range of activities for the local population.
Due to the facility’s central location, Camden-wide services will also be considered as long as need is evidenced in your expression of interest.
The new facility is 370sqm (3,700 sqft) and includes a meeting hall, a meeting room, a multi-faith room, a kitchen, reception area and office. It has been provided by King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership, the developer of King’s Cross Central, and leased to Camden Council.
The ideal tenant will have a clear strategy to promote the facility to the local community, will provide or enable activities, manage bookings and availability, and be responsible for all running costs – including utilities, rates, repairs and maintenance, and service charges. Notwithstanding these costs, the occupation of space will be offered on a peppercorn lease basis by the Council.
The tenant(s) could be arts focussed, education focussed and/or community focussed, but it is essential that the tenant(s) understand the needs of the community and are able to develop and deliver high quality facilities and services to address these needs.
We will consider innovative models to run the centre such as cross sector partnerships and consortia as long as there is a lead or accountable body that is defined as ‘not-for-profit’.
You will need to submit an Expression of Interest. A form for this is available by emailing both jeff.hopwood@camden.gov.uk AND adam.demosthenous@camden.gov.uk. (Please use both email addresses to ensure a response.)
The closing date for expressions of interest is 15th July 2016.

Mapping social prescribing in London
As part of our Regional Voices’ strategic partnership work, LVSC is mapping social prescribing activities in London. We will continue to update the map every quarter over the coming year.
The map includes links to social prescribing activities in London. Each link takes you to a uniquely created page with information about and contact details of each social prescriber.
We are also working with Healthy London Partnership (HLP) to take this work forward across London. We will look at best practice and different models of social prescribing activities in London.
The map will be widely shared with the VCSE (voluntary, community and social enterprise) sector in London. We will also share it at a strategic level with commissioners, NHS England (including HLP), London Health Board, Public Health England, local authorities, Social Prescribing Network and academic institutions that are reviewing and evaluating social prescribing activities.
If you are a social prescriber, you are cordially invited to complete our survey which will inform your unique page on the map. It will also provide useful information for our work with HLP.
If you know of other and emerging social prescribing initiatives not listed on the map, please email me: sandra@lvsc.org.uk. Access the new social prescribing map in London online here
