Our Kind of Town – Livingmaps Network Autumn Lecture

Greenery and Greed: the Loss of Natural London
Wed 21 November 2018, 18:00 – 20:00 at UCL, Gower St, WC1
The greenery of London, its parks and gardens, its woods and wild places and its wonderful collection of street trees, is one of the city’s most valuable and distinctive attributes. But it did not happen by chance. Nearly every open space has, at some time in its history, been campaigned for, argued over or fought for, sometime literally, whilst many of its street trees were the result of a radical, and sometimes controversial, civic movement. Book at Eventbrite.

London Early Years Campaign.

The Mayor is offering a total of £150,000 to improve awareness of free early education for 2-year-olds and increase take up of places by eligible families.
City Hall will award a maximum of 30 grants of between £5,000 and £15,000 each to local projects. The proposals must target areas of low take up and evidence how they will effectively engage families and communities who are currently missing out on this vital offer.
Interested bidders should have excellent links with local communities and understanding of barriers to take up of early education specific to those communities. We expect the applicants to have strong partnerships with their respective local authorities in order to understand their local childcare market, and with their local early years providers in order to provide families with access to a childcare place.
Delivery is expected to take place between January 2019 and September 2019. Full details here.

Camden Community Centres Disability Access Report

Volunteers from Camden Disability Action (CDA) visited 28 community centres in the borough to find out how accessible they are to people with a disability.
Healthwatch Camden undertook the project because Camden Council’s strategy for disabled and older people says it will “use community resources first” when developing solutions to peoples’ support needs. So how realistic would it be for someone with a disability to use the local community centres?
The overall picture is good, however there is plenty of room for improvement. The Camden Community Centres Consortium (C4) and Camden Council accept the report.  Some of the recommendations can be quickly and cheaply implemented, but others have longer term and cost implications.
You can read the full report here.

CAMERA Emergency Volunteering Programme has officially been launched in Camden and Hammersmith & Fulham by the two Volunteer Centres and are looking for expressions of interest from local people, businesses and organisations that would be able to give time, skills, space or goods in the event of an emergency.

The CAMERA response and recovery volunteer team aims to give an opportunity for local people to help in situations such as these.

Could You Help in an Emergency?

CAMERA Emergency Volunteering Programme has officially been launched in Camden and Hammersmith & Fulham by the two Volunteer Centres and are looking for expressions of interest from local people, businesses and organisations that would be able to give time, skills, space or goods in the event of an emergency.
The experience of the Grenfell tragedy and the Chalcots Estate evacuation showed that there was a surplus of people with useful skills and experience, e.g. counselling, who offered to volunteer but were not allowed to help as they were not known by the local authority dealing with the situation.
The CAMERA response and recovery volunteer team aims to give an opportunity for local people to help in situations such as these.
Share your ideas and express your interest here.
