Sunday 22 April, 11am-6pm, 3FF, Star House, Kentish Town, NW5
Security matters to all of us. We all have a stake in the task of building a more secure society, both within the UK and in the wider world. Escalating violence and insecurity suggest that current approaches are not working. Part of the reason for this is that they do not adequately reflect the needs, concerns and hopes of a broad range of people.
On Sunday 22 April, 3FF will be hosting an event in partnership with Rethinking Security (RS): an organisation which promotes conversations about security in different communities.
We invite you to join with others for a conversation about security: what it means to people of different faiths and beliefs and how it can be improved, both here in the UK and globally. Find out more and apply here.

National

New Study Shows Powerful Relationship Between Vibrant Voluntary Sector and Crime.

The effect means that In short: in a city with 100,000 residents, if you establish another 10 charities or community groups, regardless of their purpose, you get a 9% drop in the murder rate and a 6% fall in violent crime and 4% reduction in burglary.  And the voluntary and community groups don’t even have to be conciously addressing crime issues. The Role of the Voluntary and Community Sector in Health and Social Care

The Kings Fund has launched a major report on the role of volunteering in health and social care and VAC’s Health Advocates project features as one of the case studies in the social prescribing section. The report highlights the profound implications for health that these new approaches can have but also looks at the practical things that make them work –  the importance of building partnerships and relationships across (and within) sectors, recognition of resource implications (not free but with potentially large returns on modest investment) and a valuable opportunity to build bridges between health services and the community.  There is an interactive website where you can find out more and download the report.  A recent Guardian article on the contribution of community to good health shows the level of interest that this movement is getting right now.

Youth Safety in Camden

We’ve launched a Youth Safety Taskforce to help young people stay safe in Camden and examine the underlying causes of youth violence.
Camden has seen an eight per cent rise in knife crime with injuries in the last year, according to the latest official crime figures, with young people often the victims of violent crime. The Camden Youth Safety Taskforce has been set up to help us understand, prevent and ultimately reduce violence amongst young people, including knife crime, in the borough.
We are keen to hear from young people themselves, young adults, local parents and professionals who work with young people, as well as residents.

It should be the Government’s job to fund services and activities for young people in London, but it has abdicated its responsibilities. That’s why the Mayor has listened to Londoners’ concerns and is stepping up to provide funding that local communities and charities desperately need and to help young people fulfil their potential.

We know securing core funding can be tough and want to use this programme to help support those doing much needed work in their local communities.

Deadline for Round 2 applications is 26th February 2018 by 5pm.

Camden Council’s review of the support needs of community and voluntary groups

We invite you to take part in a very important survey that is being carried out to review the support needed by voluntary and community groups, including small groups, to carry out their job well.
A questionnaire has been put together and everyone is being asked to complete it. The questionnaire only has 8 questions and should not take too long to do.
The results of the questionnaire will be used to write a report that will guide what support is available to voluntary and community groups, including small groups, in the future.  So, it is important for everyone  to complete and submit the survey to make sure all ideas and requests for support are taken into account.
The link to the survey is https://www.questionpro.com/t/AiRIZbSQr
Your participation is completely voluntary – your responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported in a way that will not identify you. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point.
If you have questions about the survey, or the wider review, please contact John Griffiths at john.griffiths@rocketsciencelab.co.uk.

Comic Relief – Core Strength

This 12-month programme is responding to the growing need of small locally-led groups to cover their day-to-day costs. The aim is to provide funding for groups’ core costs – meaning expenditure that is not connected to delivering projects but focusing on investing in the organisation as a whole, such as basic running costs. We know securing core funding can be tough and want to use this programme to help support those doing much needed work in their local communities.
Grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 are available for organisations with an annual income of £100,000 or under in the last financial year.
Deadline for Round 2 applications is 26th February 2018 by 5pm.
