“Libres” – a concert and a lecture, story telling and folk song by Pilar Lopez
In 1936, in an unprecedented act of solidarity, people from many countries in Europe, Asia and the American continent traveled to Spain to risk their lives fighting fascism. At the same time workers & their unions were engaging in a deep transformation of society, a Social Revolution.
“Libres” brings stories, songs and images from these times and makes connections with today’s resistance to fascism and with contemporary currents striving for peace & liberty.
Friday 17 November, 7pm, at Torriano Meeting House.

Mental Health Charity seeking New Premises in North London
CPU is a charity which offers free and low cost psychotherapy to Londoners on lower incomes. We have been told that our lease will be coming to an end next summer. Like so many others in the voluntary sector we will struggle to pay a commercial rent in London, although we have the funds to pay a reasonable amount. We would be very open to the idea of sharing premises with other charities or community groups if that is something that would work on a practical level. We need around 80-100m2 of space and access to basic facilities. The premises we work from need to have D1 planning consent and needs to be divided up into office space and consulting rooms with a small waiting area. To get in touch please email us at cpu@vac.org.uk or call 0207 284 6558, asking for Alex Winter.

National
Marmot Speech on Social Determinants of Health
Professor Sir Michael Marmot from the UCL Institute of Health Equity gave an important speech recently on the role of social determinants of health and non communicable diseases, looking at the ’causes of the causes’:
“There is a rumour going around that poor people are poor because they make poor choices; and that poor people are unhealthy because they make unhealthy choices. This rumour is a myth. It has the causal connection backwards. More accurately, it is not mythical that the rumour exists – I read it in the press nearly daily – but the evidence points the other way. It is not poor choices that lead to poverty, but poverty that leads to poor choices.” Read the speech here.

Camden Community energy grant
Community energy is a way in which communities can own, manage and generate renewable energy systems, which brings benefits to the local community. Many successful community renewable energy projects have been developed across the UK, including Camden, however one of the main barriers to setting up new schemes is funding to pay for the measures.
The Camden Climate Fund provides grants of up to £15,000 for community energy groups to install and manage renewable energy systems that generate energy for the benefit of the local community in some form. This could be for example, solar photovoltaic panels on a building such as a community centre or school. Find out more at the Camden website.

What: Is your organisation reflective of the community it supports? For an increasing number of local organisations the answer to this is no, and now many have funding targets to increase the diversity of their volunteer team. This could include anything from age, gender, ethnicity, religion, economic background, work status, disability and the list goes on!
