Help make Camden a Healthier and Happier Place

Come along to the co-design event to develop ideas for how health and wellbeing should be addressed in the west of Camden. These ideas will be taken forward by the council and partners and will have the support of other experts (including councillors, GPs, directors and community leaders).
We’re looking for residents who live in Kilburn, Swiss Cottage, Fortune Green or West Hampstead to come and get involved.

Future Community Leaders

Civic Futures is a new project run in partnership with the Greater London Authority (GLA). Intended to support the urgent work of community leaders all over London. Civic Futures starts by asking how we best bring together some of the amazing people active across London to learn from and support each other in building a better future?
The programme is looking for 25 of London’s most rooted, determined community leaders to join a funded collective learning programme starting in September 2019.  You can nominate yourself or someone you know online.

Future Parks Launch

Camden and Islington Public Health in partnership with Islington and Camden’s Greenspace teams have been successful in securing one of 8 grants nationally to the Heritage Lottery Fund and National Trusts Future Parks Fund. This is for the Camden and Islington Parks for Health Project, a two year funded project that will seek to transform the role of parks, re-commissioning them as public health assets for the 21st century.
The project on launches on Tuesday 18th June. We will be hosting an event at Caledonian Park (11.45am – 3pm) to invite key partners and showcase some of the principles that the project is seeking to achieve.Please reply to public.realm@islington.gov.uk to confirm your attendance.

Ageing Better in Camden Outreach Project

The ABC Outreach Team proactively meet and engage with thousands of older people in the community, particularly those who are not already in contact with, or are reluctant to access, formal services or support.Two reports on the work have been relased.  Read the reports here.

Fulfilling Lives Islington & Camden and Ice & Fire

People facing multiple disadvantage may experience several overlapping problems at the same time, such as mental ill health, homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, offending and family breakdown. Fulfilling Lives Islington & Camden (FLIC) invites you to join them for a unique theatre experience on Wednesday 3rd July, St Pancras Hospital from 1.15pm. Brought to life by professional actors, the script is based on the powerful personal testimonies of people FLIC has worked with in Camden and Islington over the past four years.

Back to the future: What next for voluntary action and the welfare state?

The boundaries between the state and the voluntary sector are being renegotiated, to the extent that some have called the 2010s ‘a revolutionary moment’. The same term was used to describe the establishment of comprehensive welfare services in the 1940s. At these two transformational moments, fundamental questions have been raised about who is responsible for the provision of welfare services. Full details at Eventbrite.

Labour’s civil society strategy met with positive response

The Labour Party’s new Civil Society Strategy contains a number of exciting provisions, including: The Right to Space, to ensure communities have a place to meet. A Community Innovation Fund using dormant assets and a new Public Right to Control.
Other committments include:
~ Using community-led/anchor organisations
~ The introduction of collaborative decision making in public procurement
~ More involvement of the sector in public service design and delivery
~ Strengthen the social value act
~ Ban gagging clauses
They also intend to put trustees on the same footing as school governors and councillors with a statutory right to time off work to carry out duties.   There are a number of interesting examples in the report including the Preston model of Community Wealth Building.

Prevention: the new holy grail of treating mental illness

Investment in keeping people well could save many lives and much money, experts say. Far more attention should be devoted to preventing mental illness rather than simply treating it as it arises, health experts say, comparing the current approach to only treating heart disease after a cardiac arrest. BAME Communities: Ageing in Place – call for research project proposals

GMCVO (the VAC of Manchester) is seeking organisations with strong links into Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and who can engage with the BAME-led organisations in Birmingham, Camden, Hackney, Leicester and Manchester.
Can your organisation:
• Engage with specific BAME communities in one or more of the areas and encourage community members to take part in the study?
• Interview BAME-led organisations to understand how they engage with members from their community and how this might have changed over time
• Analyse the data from the interviews and present in a report about the communities in that area
There are two parts to this research:
• Interviewing BAME-led organisations in a specified area (follow the link below for details) to understand how these organisations engage with members from their community aged 50 and over and how this might have changed over time.
• Carrying out qualitative interviews with individuals aged 50 and over from the stated BAME communities to identify and explore the places, organisations and services they use for social contact and interaction

Satellite Club Funding from London Sport

Satellite Clubs are focused on supporting an increase in the number of 14-19-year olds participating regularly in physical activity and sport.
The clubs should be designed to meet the needs of young people and provide a positive fun experience, giving young people the confidence to take part.

Inclusive Community Fund

The Camden Giving ‘Inclusive Community Fund’ is a partnership with Camden Disability Action, funded by the London Borough of Camden’s Community Impacts programme. The programme puts people with disabilities at the heart of the decisions, empowering them to make informed choices on which projects to fund based on their own experiences.
The Inclusive Fund exists to increase access to, and participation in, mainstream services, activities and facilities for disabled adults in Camden.
Grants from £2.5k to £20k are available. Deadline 15th July. Details here.

Shaping Young Londoners Future

The Mayor is looking for project applications that will provide activities that can make a real difference to young people so they feel positive about their prospects; are informed by local knowledge, need and demand and shaped by those closest to the community;  have involved young people in the design and delivery.

Are you a Qualified Teacher with Time to Volunteer?

The English Network is a Camden run project which links qualified volunteer EFL teachers with Camden residents who need to improve their English language skills. Lessons are taught one-to-one within libraries and other Council buildings in Camden for an hour a week.
This post requires a TEFL qualification, preferably a CELTA or Trinity TESOL certificate, but candidates with a TEFL certificate will be considered if they have previous teaching experience.

Volunteer with VAC and develop experience and skills in public health

VAC provide training, and work opportunities for Camden volunteers who can commit 2 hours per week.
We offer free Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) training to volunteer as a Community Links volunteer, part of a new Care Navigation and Social Prescribing service in Camden. Community Links volunteers signpost residents to community based activities and help with formal referrals where community based activities are needed alongside clinical care.

VAC has recently moved to a new home at Charlie Ratchford Centre, Belmont Street, NW1. We are sharing the building with Camden Carers and Camden Disability Action.  It is a very busy building with lots of visitors and events.
We are recruiting volunteer receptionists to be the first point of contact for visitors. I You will be an important member of the VAC team of volunteers and staff and will have access to training and ongoing support.

Camden Alive

Interested in the history of your area and people’s Camden stories?
Camden Alive are looking for volunteers who will be trained in how to interview people and how to make films about people’s stories.
Training will be two days: Monday 10 June 2019 and Friday 14 June
The project is looking for people to join in from Maiden Lane, The Sidings, Lismore Circus, Brunswick, The Bourne, St Silas & Southfleet, Alexandra & Ainsworth, Regent’s Park, Ossulston and Chalcots.
