Gagging Act Becomes ‘Permanent’ In an unprecedented series of events the ‘gagging act’ has become ‘permanent’. It was controversial when it was only supposed to apply to the year running up to a general election. The act fixing parliamentary terms had been passed so what could go wrong? Two things: a snap election and then the Electoral Commission’s decision to back date the gagging act so that large charities and Trades Union affected were in the controlled period of the act from last summer – though they could not have known that then. Full story in Third Force News. Fortunately local charities are rarely affected by the Act. Just be sure to follow out advice on the VAC website. vac.org.uk/election-time-campaigning-with-confidence-dos-and-donts/ Politiciants Told: Engage with the voluntary Sector
