NEWS & POLICY

Camden Community Impacts Consultation
The Community Impacts Fund is the final part of the new council funding strategy for the voluntary and community sector (2017 – 2024) following on from the Strategic Partners Funds for Neighbourhoods and Equalities.
The idea for the Community Impacts Fund is that all sectors could focus on a handful of issues and work together to address them. The following priorities have been decided:
~ Rough sleeping
~ Mental health
~ Youth offending
~ Supporting people in the community
The council has now started a consultation process to get feedback on the four priority areas and how you feel that they can best be addressed. There is extensive information on the the Camden council website. The deadline for responses is Sunday 20th August 2017.

Community Connectors News
C4 has provided the Community Connectors project for Ageing Better in Camden (ABC) for the last 2 years. The project has made a real difference improving the isolation and loneliness of the people it connected. The contract, in its current iteration, comes to an end an on 30th September 2017. After a contract evaluation, ABC will be looking to advertise a revised specification based on the lessons learned from the last 2 years – this will be available by end of September 2017 – with new contract delivery starting in early 2018. During the interim period, between contracts, Age UK Camden will be covering the phone and email accounts, so all potential clients are provided with a holding service.
As part of the contract evaluation, Ageing Better in Camden is consulting with local older people on 14th August at 10am and Camden’s voluntary and community sector on 9th August, 11am. If you are interested in contributing to either of these learning and listening events, please contact ageingbetterincamden@ageukcamden.org.uk. Both events will be held at Tavis House, 1-6 Tavistock Square, WC1H 9NA.

National
Investigating the impact of the English health inequalities strategy
A landmark report into the English health inequalities strategy—a cross government strategy implemented between 1997 and 2010 to reduce health inequalities in England. This was one of the most ambitious strategies of its kind ever undertaken and aimed to tackle the underlying social determinants of health (reducing poverty and disadvantage) rather than the current focus on individual ‘lifestyle’ changes. The English health inequalities strategy was associated with a decline in geographical inequalities in life expectancy, reversing a previously increasing trend. Since the strategy ended, inequalities have started to increase again. The strategy may have reduced geographical health inequalities in life expectancy, and future approaches should learn from this experience. The concerns are that current policies are reversing the achievements of the strategy. Details on the BMJ website.

LGiU Report: Community collaboration: a councillor’s guide
Engaging people in the decisions that affect their lives is an essential feature of local democracy. This goes far beyond town hall meetings and opinion surveys: we must recognise that communities often hold the answers to their own problems and allow them an equal voice at the table. For the purposes of this report, we call this concept ‘Community Collaboration’. Read the full report at lgiu.org.uk
