Chalcots Update

The leader of the council has issued an update on the situation. There are also updates on the Council website, including a page of thanks to Camden voluntary organisations who have been helping in a variety of ways. There is now a page on the Camden website for voluntary and community groups to offer support.
The Camden New Journal have extensive coverage of the situation including a call for a independent investigation. The council is calling on hotels not to profiteer from the situation.
Community Foundations struggled to deal with the situation after the Grenfell fire and the Guardian carries a thoughtful article on how Community Foundations can respond in the longer term to such disasters in a local community.

NEWS & POLICY

Refugee Week Follow Up
Following World Refugee Day and Refugee Week, Oxfam have issued a series of briefings and updates around refugee issues including a series of blogs and reports on refugees around the globe.

What is Our Way Ahead?
This is an open event, which aims to provide a platform through which networks can connect and contribute to a wider movement that is democratic, sustainable and genuinely supportive of each other. At a time of crisis and division, it is even more imperative that we come together to build voice and grassroots infrastructure. Through a a series of presentations, storytelling, testimonies and group discussions, we hope to reflect on the recent events – Brexit, Austerity, Grenfell and many more – and a agree a common purpose and plan for collective action.
Let’s build stronger communities/Look beyond existing policy frameworks/Respond with greater community voice and agency.

National
Social Prescribing Update: Why do vulnerable people need statutory services to help them access their own community?
An interesting article on community and social care from Mark Gamsu who concludes his article with this point:
“It is very important that statutory organisations such as big NHS providers, Clinical Commissioning Groups and those professionals funded by the state like GPs understand that it is not good enough to just design pathways that reconnect people with communities.
Communities are not just waiting with lots of spare capacity for people to be referred to them. They need investment too – the Rotherham Social Prescribing scheme, one of the biggest in the country invests two thirds of its resources in local community and voluntary organisations.
We should support social prescribing and personalisation pathways but commissioners need to give at least as much weight to investing in grass roots community organisations and building their capacity.” Read the full article here.

Are Social Housing Tenants Being Sidelined?
The fall out from the Grenfell tower fire has sparked a wide ranging debate from social housing to deregulation. The Guardian has a coruscating article on the disempowerment of ordinary residents as housing estates have been modernised and redeveloped.

Treasurer Required for Charity Board
SPCA (St Pancras Community Association) is a community based charity with a turnover of around £250,000, based a few minutes north of St Pancras Station. It works primarily for the benefit of local people and its priorities include reducing isolation among older people, giving young families a good start in life, building community pride and getting local people more physically active.
We need a treasurer to join our voluntary trustees. The treasurer oversees the organisation’s finances but does not need to manage the money directly. She or he will work closely with paid staff to ensure that they set annual budgets appropriately and that spending is properly monitored and audited and that appropriate systems are in place. They will also support other trustees and ensure that they are aware of their financial risks and policies.
The trustee role involves a monthly board meeting and the treasurer typically has one additional and more detailed meeting per year when budgets are agreed and usually a quarterly discussion with the Director or finance officer to check on progress. The treasurer is not expected to keep the books or do all the calculations for budget setting, which are done by paid employees.

OFFERS, RESOURCES & ANNOUNCEMENTS

SPOC, helping local charities live long and prosper
NAVCA has published a report to highlight how a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) commissioning model provides better services for people and communities, improves their wellbeing and can save money. The SPOC model overcomes barriers that commissioners claim make it difficult for them to work with smaller charities. The SPOC model involves a trusted single non-provider charity building a coalition of small local charities and taking on the grant or contract management, monitoring and administration, enabling commissioners to focus on strategic planning. Small local charities are generally set up to serve the very specific needs of a particular community and are able to focus on people’s needs rather than large generic services that too often miss their target.
