Campaign launches to reduce stigma of loneliness in Camden

Voluntary Action Camden and Camden Council have launched the ‘Camden together’ campaign, which aims to reduce the stigma of loneliness and support residents to connect with other people in their community.

We know that so much fantastic work is already going on in Camden to reduce loneliness and promote community connection and friendships. We would like to highlight some of these examples as part of Camden, together. We would love to hear what your organisation is doing – and please let us know about any Christmas dinners, festive events or any other free or low cost events that you would like us to promote over the coming weeks and we can share via our channels.

Fallout continues over NI contributions announcement

A survey by the Charity Retail Association reveals the various measures many charities are now considering after the recent budget announcement to increase national insurance contributions for employers, with a third of those surveyed anticipating they will have to cut staff. 25% of respondents said they will have to close shops once the NI rise comes in, while two thirds of charities say they will have to raise prices. Meanwhile in parliament, various politicians criticised the government’s decision in a debate on Tuesday, highlighting the danger to the sector.

Volunteering participation higher before pandemic

The pandemic marked a clear divide in volunteering levels in England, shown in the new Community Life survey which studies aspects of community engagement in adults. 23% of adults volunteered regularly (at least once a month) in 2019/20, but that figure has since decreased year on year, with only 16% doing so in 2023/24. The survey also gives information on volunteering by age group and geographical area.

Giving Tuesday success fails to translate to UK

One of the biggest dates in the US philanthropy calendar, Giving Tuesday (falling on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving), has not achieved the same relevance in the UK. Recent years have seen a push to build fundraising campaigns around Giving Tuesday in the UK, but Enthuse’s Christmas Giving report showed that more donations are received on other days in the festive period.

UK not-for-profit groups specialising in legal advice for immigration issues can once again apply for a grant from the Strategic Legal Fund, to support strategic legal work in the UK which benefits asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants who are experiencing disadvantage or discrimination as a result of their migration status.
The Elephant Trust has grants available to artists, small organisations and galleries within the UK to make it possible for artists and those presenting their work to undertake and complete projects when frustrated by lack of funds.
Sport England has just announced that its Movement Fund will give priority to sports and activities that need help to recover quickly from recent extreme weather in Storms Bert and Connall.
Amazon Literary Partnership 2025 – One-off annual grants are available for not-for-profit literary organisations in the UK that empower writers, helping them create, publish, learn, teach, experiment and thrive.
The US Embassy to the United Kingdom’s Annual Grants Programme offers grants to not-for-profit organisations, academic institutions, individuals, government institutions in the UK for projects that strengthen bilateral ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.
Art Fund Museum of the Year is an annual prize that recognises and celebrates outstanding work and projects across UK museums and provides a platform to encourage audiences to engage with museums far and wide.

Queerspace and Transpace

Weekly, alternating social support groups held by Likewise. Queerspace is for all LGBTQ+ people and Transpace is for Trans* people. The groups run from 5:30-7:00pm on Mondays in Swiss Cottage (full address is given via email). The groups are facilitated and have an intentional focus on mental health. Camden’s Community Champions Programme

Camden Council are recommissioning their community champions programme and increasing the number of projects from three to five from April 2025. They are hosting an information session on Wednesday 11th December, 2:00 – 3:00pm in Training Room 5 at the Crowndale Centre, 218 Eversholt Street, NW1 1BD. Spring Term at WAC Arts

Wac Arts Spring Term runs from Saturday 11th January 2025 to Sunday 30th March 2025, offering 10 weeks of affordable classes for all ages, with bursaries available. From performing and creative to digital arts, we have engaging weekend and evening classes for ages 4+. The programs encourage growth, progression, and a passion for the arts, providing young people with essential creative opportunities.

Venue: Holborn House Community Centre
Make gifts to share with your friends and family! Designers, makers, architects and engineers working with MillerKnoll will be hosting a making session for you on 12th December. Design gifts you can take home and give to friends and family for Christmas. Activities include illustration with the Quentin Blake Centre and fabric wall hangings. Refreshments available.

Race Equality Foundation webinar

The Race Equality Foundation, with a coalition of partners including the Muslim Charities Forum, are hosting a workshop on 12th December: ‘The Media’s Role: Narratives and Rhetoric of the Racist Riots’. This session will explore the impact of enduring Islamophobic and racist narratives, and will examine the media’s role in perpetuating this harmful rhetoric. The session will also open up a discussion on what steps the voluntary and public sectors can take to push back and challenge these harmful narratives. Secure your place here.

NCVO takes views on Civil Society Covenant

Ahead of next year’s Civil Society Covenant, a new framework which is designed to reset the relationship between the government and civil society sector, NCVO have created a set of draft principles to be considered. They are inviting feedback from across civil society, including charities, community groups, social enterprises, cooperatives and funders. Have your say here.

Free Four-Day Peer Mentor course from VoiceAbility

Voiceability want to hear from you if you have lived experience of mental health and wish to support others. Big Give – Acland Burghley’s Hall for All campaign

Hall for All is a campaign to restore the Assembly Hall at Acland Burghley School, Camden, to its former glory, establishing a world-class performance and exhibition space, preserving local heritage and giving current and future generations of local people – irrespective of background – access to a professional arts space. As part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge, running until Tuesday 10 December, donations to this cause will be doubled.

Camden’s Survey on Alcohol Impact

Camden Council are developing a strategy aimed at reducing alcohol harms for residents, and they would like to hear from Camden residents about your experiences and understanding with regards to alcohol. The questions involved are asked without judgement, and the council highly value your opinions. The information you provide will be instrumental in shaping their initiatives and strategies moving forward.

Reach out Camden

Reach Out Camden is a collaborative initiative offering free mental health and wellbeing support to residents in Camden. Delivered through a partnership of four charities—Mind in Camden, Likewise, The Advocacy Project, and VoiceAbility—it provides tailored, person-centred support to meet individual needs. Services include one-to-one support, peer support groups, and a range of wellbeing sessions, such as arts and crafts, exercise classes, admin support sessions, and nature walks. These activities aim to enhance life skills, build connections, and promote overall wellbeing. If you need support to identify which type of service might be most suited to you, one of Reach’s dedicated navigators can be allocated to work alongside you to figure this out.

Camden residents aged 18+ who are living in or registered with a Camden GP can access Reach Out Camden by making a referral onlin e, by phone, or in person. Alternatively, they can drop into the Likewise Community Centre to try out an activity or learn more. The initiative really values community involvement, facilitating engagement in shaping future services to better address the needs of residents. By simplifying access to mental health resources and breaking down barriers to care, Reach Out Camden strives to create a strong, inclusive community that supports wellbeing for all.

No exemptions for charities on National Insurance

Despite coordinated efforts from the sector imploring the government to reconsider the recent budget announcement on National Insurance Contributions for employers, the chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced that there will be no exemptions or reimbursements for charities. Sector bodies such as NCVO and ACEVO reacted with disappointment to the news, and the Charity Finance Group are documenting their ongoing response.

Misunderstanding of value is limiting charity impact

A new report by the Charity Reform Group suggests that third sector organisations have the history, expertise and creative potential to have a much higher impact on policies and public life. Arguing that the current public image of charities restricts them to service providers only, the Forces for Good report calls for a shift in the relationship with government and includes a set of recommendations for charities to re-think how to present themselves and improve collaboration with other sectors.

Report lays bare banking challenges for charities

92% of charities claimed they had faced issues with banking in the last 2 years, examined in a new report* published by the Civil Society Group. Changing signatories on bank account mandates was the most likely process to cause challenges, experienced by 75% of those surveyed, with many charities claiming that communication issues with banks and long delays are common when trying to get signatories changed.

We Make Camden Project Fund – Camden Council has launched a new fund to support organisations making a difference to residents in the borough. Local not-for-profit organisations can now apply for grants between £5,000-£20,000 a year to support a range of projects that make a difference to Camden communities. Application deadline 1pm Monday 27 January 2025.
The Make It Big Pathway Fund is here to fill a crucial gap in support for Black and Global Majority-led charities and social enterprises, helping you strengthen your foundation and prepare for social investment.
Steel Charitable Trust – Grants are available to registered charities in the UK to deliver a variety of projects and activities that benefit children and young people under the age of 26.
The second annual Manchester Prize is now accepting applications, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Clean Energy Systems.
Arts Council England’s Incentivising Touring scheme has repayable grants available for mid- and large-scale theatre and dance productions to tour in England, supporting new works, revivals, or remounts that demonstrate financial viability with Arts Council England’s investment.
The One Stop Community Partnership programme has grants through a partnership programme to support not-for-profit organisations with local community projects that address social welfare and environmental issues.

Community Performance Opportunity – O2 Centre Finchley Road

Euston-based dance organisation The Place is bringing the award-winning, community-led performance Super Normal Extra Natural by Requardt&Rosenberg to the O2 Centre this coming February. The show premiered last year at Croydon’s Whitgift Centre as part of London Borough of Culture. They’re looking for 20 community members (18+) to spend a week rehearsing and performing in the show. VAC has office furniture to donate

Calling charities, community and voluntary groups in Camden and the local area… help VAC find a home for our office furniture. We have a surplus of desks, tables, chairs, a sofa and even a projector screen (sans projector) to donate, for anyone who can come to pick it up from our office on 8-12 Camden High Street. The furniture is in good condition so we hope it can be useful for someone in the local area. We’ve included some pictures below and more on our Instagram profile, so message us on there or at social@vac.org.uk if you’re interested in picking something up.

Mayor argues for charities to take control of employment support

Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, who said in his election manifesto that he was committed to the devolution of the current employment support system provided by the DWP, laid out a motion at a recent event for the charity sector to be given core funding to replace the current service. As part of a wider call for local and national government to provide increased backing to the sector, he claimed that a new employment welfare support system provided by charities would instinctively see the best in people.

More Gen Zs considering trustee roles

40% of 18-24 year olds expressed interest in becoming a charity trustee in a recent survey. Carried out by Ecclesiastical and the Young Trustees Movement, the survey showed a marked increase from 24% in 2019. The encouraging news comes at a welcome time, after findings that many charities are struggling to fill their trustee boards, and Mita Desai, CEO of the YTM, urged charities to take advantage: “intergenerational perspectives aren’t just a ‘nice to have’ – they’re essential to good governance“.

Legacy income rises by 1.3% in 2023/24

The new Legacy Market Review published by Legacy Foresight showed a 1.3% rise in legacy income for UK charities in 2023/24. The slight increase from last year resulted in a total legacy income of £4.1bn across all charities, and the amount is expected to rise considerably over the next few decades.

St Andrew Holborn awards grants to support individuals in need and the charities that support them, in South Camden and the City of London.
Cash4Clubs grants are available for community and voluntary sports groups across the UK and Ireland, delivering activities for a social purpose to under-represented communities.
National Lottery Community Grant Holder Support Fund for one community or voluntary organisation to lead the development stage of this package of funding and support which aims to address the most common challenges that communities face in England.

Working with Young People in the Andrew Tate Generation

Hopscotch Women’s Centre sees the extremely damaging effects of VAWG, after the violence and abuse have already been committed. They are holding a co-production workshop on 27th November to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and tackle the issue at one of its roots. Hopscotch are aiming to bring the youth organisations of North London together, to reflect on the common issues we are seeing and how we can work together to have a positive impact on young people.

Camden’s SEND Local Offer Website is now live, and a launch event will take place on 25th November. Camden are inviting anyone with relevant services to host a stall at this event, to showcase the sports and leisure activities you offer for children and young people with SEND in Camden. The event will provide an excellent opportunity to promote your services to parents, carers, and frontline professionals who support families and are often seeking information about available activities. Your participation will also help enhance the Local Offer website by providing valuable insights into local activities and clubs, complementing the ongoing mapping exercise, and playing a crucial role in shaping future work.

Holiday Activities and Food programme – winter 2024-25

The Camden Holiday Activities and Food winter programme runs from 23 December-3 January and is open for children and young people aged 5-16 who live in Camden and are eligible for free school meals. The programme offers free, fun activities and nutritional education – from learning to make healthy meals, to creative activities, including photography, drama, arts and crafts, and sports such as football and basketball. A free hot meal is included as part of each day’s activities.

Winter Wellness Drop-in at Castlehaven

Castlehaven Community Association is hosting a free Winter Wellness Drop-In on 26th November, from 12 to 4 pm in their community kitchen. Everyone is welcome to stop by for health check-ups and support from NHS professionals, including blood pressure checks, COVID boosters, flu jabs, and general health advice. No booking needed. Participate in a Climate Strategy Room

Camden Council invites you to join a Strategy Room at the Swiss Cottage Community Centre on November 23rd to help inform Camden’s next Climate Action Plan. In the space of 90 minutes, you will discuss different policies on food and energy. Camden are looking for 12 residents aged 18 and over to participate, and you do not need any specialist skills or knowledge to participate. Each participant will receive a £20 voucher for their time. Amid widespread concern in the charity sector over the recently announced rise in employer national insurance contributions, the Charity Finance Group have commissioned a survey in which charities can give their thoughts on what impact the new budget will have. CFG will use the findings to advocate and influence on behalf of the sector.

HCA – Male Carers

Holborn Community Association, on behalf of Camden Council, want to reach out to Male Carers. A carer is someone of any age who, without payment, provides care and support to a partner, friend, relative or neighbour who could not manage without their help. State of the sector report launch event

Our whole team, but particularly our Membership Development Officer, Vania Guetova, have been working really hard to better show how our services, projects and collaborative work with partners have made an impact on civil society in Camden. The Camden Community Infrastructure Partners – VAC, VCC, C4, YCF and Camden Community Partners Team – recently launched the externally commissioned and first for the borough of Camden State of the Voluntary and Community Sector report.

The launch of the report on 6^th November was hosted by VAC. Among the honoured guests were members of the Camden CEOs, Trustees and New Groups Networks, leaders of the VAC, VCC,C4, YCF and Camden Community Partnership Team who were taken through the report with a presentation by an externally commissioned consultant Ian Beaver. The aim of the report is to help local stakeholders better understand the strengths and challenges of Camden’s civil society in today’s operating environment. The research enabled Camden Community Infrastructure partners to see the sector’s support requirements against some of the biggest challenges the research identified.

CEO Diversity statistics unchanged from previous year

The 2024 ACEVO Pay and Equalities Survey has revealed that the number of charity CEOs from minoritised ethnic backgrounds has not changed from 7%, the same figure as last year. The survey also showed that the gender pay gap in the charity sector has risen to 14.4%, compared to 8.3% the previous year. The findings were criticised by the CEO of ACEVO, Jane Ide: “For a sector that is driven by purpose and the belief that change can be made real, we seem to be either deeply unwilling or systemically unable to make meaningful change for the people that we task with leading our sector”.

Closure of NCS could impact on youth services

The recently announced closure of the National Citizen Service programme and the NCS Trust which runs it has been criticised, amid concern that it will affect funding for youth services. The government announced that the programme will be replaced by a new national youth strategy from March 2025.

Research explores ethics around accepting donations

Charities that outright refuse donations from sources with different values to their own should reconsider, according to a new paper published by think thank Rogare, in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Fundraising. The paper argues that the primary condition for accepting donations should be the potential for harm. CIoF director of policy and communications, Claire Stanley, said charities should develop a robust decision-making process for dealing with donations on a case by case basis.

Opportunity to share views on HPV Vaccine

Groundwork London is working alongside communities to find out how to protect young people against cancers caused by HPV. Since Covid, fewer young people are taking up the HPV vaccine (for girls, it’s from 80% to 49% taking the vaccine). Groundwork want to know why, and to make sure that all communities are getting the information they need to make informed choices. Certain groups are less likely to be protected by the vaccine, and it is particularly important to hear from them: young people in year 7 and 8, parents and carers, and young people aged 16 to 25. For small voluntary organisations, Groundwork can supply a small budget to cover staff time and building costs for a session. Call out for the Camden Youth Dance Festival

Apply now to be a part of the Camden Youth Dance Festival taking place on 28th Feb 2025! Camden Youth Dance Festival is an annual celebration of dance by young people across Camden. It’s a fantastic chance for young people from schools and community groups in our local borough to get to showcase their talent on a professional stage. Dancers must be between 11 and 18 years. Pieces can be up to 7 minutes long, with no more than 25 dancers per group. Applications close on 13th December.

Charity bodies publish open letter on NI Contributions

Fallout continues from last week’s budget announcement regarding the rise in National Insurance Contributions for employers, as umbrella bodies NCVO and ACEVO published an open letter that has since been signed by over 1000 charities. Sector leaders have called for exemptions or allowances for charities considering the financial strain many are facing, amid the projection that the policy will cost charities an additional £1.4bn per year.

Trustee vacancies causing skills and governance crisis

Two new reports were published this week revealing the scale of trustee vacancies and the effect this has on charity governance and operations. The reports by NCVO and PBE, show that 4 out of 5 charities in England and Wales now have at least one vacancy on their boards, leading to skills gaps and underrepresentation, especially for smaller charities. Despite this, research shows that satisfaction is high in trustee roles, with 8 in 10 saying they were likely or very likely to recommend their role to others.

Government targets charity tax loopholes

The Government has published a consultation on charities tax compliance, which contains new plans to restrict tax reliefs “in ways that aren’t intended”. The changes intend to prevent misuse of charitable investment rules, among others, and protect the sector’s integrity. They will claim £125m back for the state by 2029-30.

Contribute to State of the Borough 2025
Camden Council has launched a Call for Evidence inviting VCS organisations across the borough to contribute to the annual State of the Borough report. The report is intended as a shared evidence base for the council, partners, communities, and residents. It describes how things are for people in Camden, focusing on outcomes for residents and communities, and using quantitative data, lived experiences, analysis across demographic factors, etc. If you are interested in contributing, you could respond to this expression of interest. If you would like to know more or have questions, the council is also organising information sessions on 31st October and 6th November.

Communications Survey round up

We wanted to kick off this week’s newsletter by saying a massive thank you to everyone who contributed to our recent Communications Survey. Interactions like this really help us get to know you better and get an idea about what’s working well for us and what we could do differently. Lots of you were forthcoming and helpful with your specific thoughts about the newsletter, communications and social media in the charity sector (it’s definitely an interesting time in that regard!).

Thankfully almost all our survey responses indicated that our newsletter continues to be a helpful resource for many people. We’re really happy about that, and proud of the space the newsletter represents in the local charity and community sector. There are some things for us to think about in terms of how we get more useful content into an already packed newsletter, a challenge we’re looking forward to tackling.

One of the things we noticed was that some people didn’t necessarily feel that VAC’s content and communications represented them or the group they work for. If you’re someone who feels this way, we’d really like you to get in touch if you feel comfortable doing so, to let us know a bit more about this. You can message us on any of our social media accounts, or send an email to social@vac.org.uk, and we can work together on representing you better.

We’ve now closed the communications survey, but if you have any thoughts you would like to share with us in future please let us know! And please continue to send your upcoming work – events, opportunities, vacancies etc.. to social@vac.org.uk.

Charities react to first government budget

The first budget of the new Labour government was announced on Wednesday (30th October), and Civil Society have published analysis on the key points, with reaction from NGOs and other charity bodies on what they mean for the charity sector. Major talking points from the budget include a rise on employers’ national insurance contributions and on minimum wage rates.

Links with VCS achieve better health and care outcomes

A new report published by the Care Quality Commission, which regulates and inspects health and social care providers, in England, has found that local authorities with strong likes to VCSE organisations achieve better outcomes than those that don’t. The study suggests that such links enable health and care providers to better understand local populations, support carers and access important data that improve care across the board.

Charities should confront flawed systems, not avoid them

A recent speech given by Danny Sriskandarajah challenged the charity sector to engage with inherited socio economic systems in order to change them. The CEO of the New Economics Foundation spoke about a perceived tendency that UK charities are intimidated by flawed economic and political systems and so work outside them, neglecting the opportunity to lead by example by confronting systems directly.

Foyle Foundation’s Small Grants scheme to support smaller, grass-roots and local charities and Main Grants scheme to benefit charitable causes in either the arts or learning.
Bòrd na Gàidhlig – Seachdain na Gàidhlig Small Grants Fund for community groups, individuals, educational establishments and professional organisations to support the delivery of events that will promote Scottish Gaelic during Seachdain na Gàidhlig.
Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Grants to help fund breakfast clubs aimed at pupils between reception class and year 13 to ensure that those who need it most receive a morning meal.
Ulverscroft Foundation provides funding for projects in the UK that benefit visually impaired people.
The Woodward Charitable Trust for small charities working with isolated children and young people, disadvantaged families, and/or prisoners and ex-offenders.

Interfaith week at Camden

To celebrate interfaith week, Camden have curated a rich programme of Interfaith events throughout November, a month in which a number of religious festivals take place, including Diwali and Bhandi Chhor Divas. You can find the full programme here.

The Camden Safety Bus

The Camden Safety Bus is a safe space for anyone in Camden who needs assistance, support or just someone to talk to when on a night out. This includes women and girls who often don’t feel safe or have experienced harassment or inappropriate behaviour. Whether you’re feeling vulnerable, or you need to charge your phone, grab a water or find a route home – we’re here for you. Trustees report struggle to achieve positive EDI outcomes

A study by the Directory of Social Change of performance in seven key governance areas has revealed that equality, diversion and inclusion (EDI) as the area in which charity trustees reported having the least success. The project asked trustees to rate their charities own outcomes across a range of areas, including integrity and organisational purposes, and suggested that while many charities support principles of positive EDI outcomes, they are struggling to achieve them in practice.

Survey indicates lack of trust in X as a useful platform

84% of respondents to a recent survey said they were reviewing the platforms they currently use, with many speaking about having left X recently due to concerns about the role the platform has in spreading disinformation, as well as seeing lower engagement there than in the past. The report by The Barrow Cadbury Trust, “Social Media in the Social Justice Sector“, studied use and perceptions of different social media platforms.

Kurdish Community meeting

After 13 years of great Kurdish Community meetings at Haverstock School, meetings are moving to the iconic British Library. This month’s meeting is on 26th October at the Last Word Cafe in the plaza of the British Library. The meetings are run on a monthly basis by Kurdish volunteers in order to help the community get together, celebrate ethnic identity, share knowledge in a sociable, cultural, educational and family friendly setting. Fitzrovia Youth in Action will be holding its annual Youth Action Showcase on Tuesday 29th October at the Indian YMCA, 41 Fitzroy Square, W1T 6AQ. Last year, FYA supported over 700 young people in delivering social action, across over 50 cohorts. At the showcase, young people will screen films and present examples of place-based social action, different types of peer support and creative ways in which they have co-produced system change. Individuals & carers experiencing multiple long-term health conditions living in Camden and surrounding areas are invited to join NCL Health Alliance’s Lived Experience Advisory Group, to inform the design of health and care for people with long-term conditions. The programme aims to make healthcare better by making sure hospital doctors, GPs and community services work more closely together. NCL expect to hold 3-4 meetings over 6 months, or one off interviews for people unable to commit to regular meetings, and you’ll be paid £25 per hour for your work with them. Participate in Workshops on AI in the Asylum System

Migrant Rights have announced announce a new research project exploring the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on people going through the asylum system. They are hosting workshops followed by paid interviews with participants to dive deeper into their contributions, with the goal of creating a shared information resource by the end of the project. Participants will receive £50 vouchers per interview, along with travel expenses covered and food provided at each workshop. 86% of charities report rise in demand for services

A recent survey of sector leaders by Charities Aid Foundation has seen a large rise in demand. 86% of those surveyed said they had experienced increased demand, compared to 46% in 2023. Organisations most likely to report increased demand were those involved in poverty-relief services, followed by human rights/equality and diversity charities. Insecurity about future funding was also a common theme among respondents.

Philanthropy failing to address root causes

BBC Children in Need director Fozia Irfan has spoken at the Charity Law Association annual conference about how charitable institutions in the UK must evolve to better benefit the public. The speech referred to the biggest social change movements of the last 5 years and how they grew from grassroots levels, rather than charities themselves. Irfan stressed that philanthropy must adjust to address the root causes of social problems.

200 fully funded Digital Learning Grants from JustGiving and Fundraising are available for charities struggling to progress digitally. This free coaching programme is designed to boost fundraising professionals’ digital skills and confidence, with a carefully curated online learning hub, 1:1 coaching calls, free workshops and access to online events.
The Young Camden Foundation Holiday Activities and Food Programme offers children and young people free access to a range of physical and creative activities, including some specialist SEND provisions
Camden Giving’s We Make Camden Kit gives grants of up to £2,000 to citizens, small organisations and schools who have great ideas to make Camden a fairer place to live and work.
St Giles in the Fields and St Georges provide relief from hardship through alms and educational grants.
The Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund has grants available to museums and galleries to borrow important works of arts and artefacts from national collections, encouraging the sharing of works more widely across the UK.
Linnean Society’s Our Local Nature Grants to deliver projects and activities that engage young people with local nature and natural spaces and improve their understanding of local biodiversity.

Real Talk debate for young people aged 16-21

The Real Talk debate for 16 to 21-year-olds in Camden aims to create a safe space for young people to express their opinions and challenge pre-conceived notions on topics that matter most to them, as well as empower local youth to shape the design and development of services in their community. This year’s Real Talk event is taking place at Camden Town Hall, Judd Street, King’s Cross, on Wednesday 23 October. Food and refreshments will be provided along with a thank you voucher for participating young people, who can book their free ticket on Eventbrite.

With over 76 parks and 300 green spaces Camden is a green oasis, perfect for every outdoor activity. To find your nearest one, check the borough wide map. VAC State of the Sector Report

Our State of the Sector repot is an extensive study across the voluntary sector landscape, which aims to give a picture of the developments and challenges facing VCS organisations in our area.

Created with the support of Camden Infrastructure Partners Volunteer Centre Camden, Young Camden Foundation and Camden Community Centres’ Consortium, the report takes information from primary and secondary data sources, as well as interviews with key local figures to identify and explore changes to workplace and operational practices, and where pressures are likely to arise – or are already visible.

We think this report makes for key reading for grassroots community organisations in Camden. Please share the report with anyone you think will be affected by these issues, and look out for more information about our official launch of the report, which will take place with an online meeting on Wednesday 6th November.

Charity sector/government agreement set for New Year

NCVO Chief Executive, Sarah Elliott, has revealed that sector bodies including her own have been working on a new agreement with the government set to be published in the new year. The new “covenant” will aim to improve relationship and understanding between the charity sector and the government. Elliot also spoke positively about the messages received from key figures in the cabinet, including culture secretary Lisa Nandy, about the future partnership.

Large charities more transparent on climate & EDI efforts

More large charities in the UK are choosing to report statistics on their carbon footprint and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Charity Finance have issued research showing 63 out of 100 large charities studied released their own EDI policy or statement this year, while 74 shared their carbon footprint. The research also showed that the larger a charity is, the more likely it is to publish EDI and climate impact data.

Report explores employee retention crisis in fundraising

A new report on legacy fundraising has revealed research showing a range of key issues facing organisations working in the area. Key figures in the sector were consulted and a majority of respondents reported issues in shortages of skilled candidates, salary dissatisfaction and a lack of career progression. The report shared recommendations to tackle the problems and improve employee retention statistics.

The Windrush Day Grant Scheme has grants available for local authorities, charities and community groups in England to commemorate, celebrate and educate people about the history of the MV Empire Windrush and the contribution of the Windrush generation and their descendants.
Energy Savings Trust is offering grants to not-for-profit groups for projects that empower householders to reduce their carbon emissions and engage positively with the transition to net zero and for the development of innovative products and services related to energy.
National Lottery Heritage Fund for for not-for-profit organisations across the UK to develop partnerships, leadership, and the capability to improve the quality of, and access to, green and blue spaces.
Funding and specialist support from UnLtd are available for UK social entrepreneurs to help them develop as social leaders, and to start up or grow their idea for a social venture.
Thomas Wall Trust grants are available for UK registered charities for specific projects that improve communication skills for disadvantaged adults and supports NEET people into employment.
GoodTech Ventures is accepting applications for a six-week programme of support, including funding, for early-stage impact-led tech companies looking to grow and scale in the UK.

National Hate Crime Awareness Week – Information Event

National Hate Crime Awareness Week takes place from 12th – 19th October. On Wednesday 16th, forum+ (a local LGBT charity) is hosting a free online event. Learn the legal definition of a hate crime, how reporting works and hear a presentation on the law from Varinder Hayre, District Crown Prosecutor & Area Legal Lead for CPS London North. The event is for those interested in learning about hate crime, LGBT rights and the law. You can find more information here.

Black History Month at Love Camden

We will be featuring a number of events marking Black History Month over the coming weeks. Love Camden have released their own programme of events, including art exhibitions, performances, cultural heritage projects and Supper Club nights at local restaurants. This weekend, Bolo Fest immerses attendees in soulful music, delicious cuisine, and a showcase of black-owned businesses. Find the full programme here.

Anti-Racism and Allyship Training

This training course on November 5 from Wipers Foundation is delivered in partnership with Action for Race Equality and will investigate exactly what it means to be anti-racist, explore concepts of power and anti-oppressive practices whilst deepening understanding of anti-racist language and terminology. Attendees will discover what is meant by ‘allyship’ and what true allyship looks like. The course provides a solid foundation upon which individuals and organisations can develop an anti-racist strategy to build towards greater justice, equality and a positive working environment.

PAPRIKA Collective: Activate & Animate & Healing Choir

PAPRIKA Collective are thrilled to launch “Activate & Animate: Stories of Kilburn” an exhibition commissioned by Camden Libraries aimed at engaging with the local community on Saturday, October 12th. This event aims to bring together local artists and community members to explore and celebrate the vibrant culture and history of Kilburn. Then, on Sunday October 13th, they will host a sharing event that invites the public to participate in a creative health activity called Healing Choir. This session is designed to foster well-being and creative expression among participants, offering a unique opportunity to connect with the arts in a meaningful way. Both events will take place at the historic Kilburn Tin Tabernacle.

Housing Ombudsman Call for Evidence

The Housing Ombudsman has launched its latest ‘Call for Evidence’ to inform its next Spotlight report, titled ‘Repairing Trust’, which will explore common issues in housing maintenance. This follows an unprecedented rise in complaints relating to disrepair, combined with increasing costs and skills shortages. In many cases, this is significantly impacting upon residents’ safety in their homes. The Housing Ombudsman encourages all stakeholders to participate to contribute their insights and experiences. “Milestones” play available to watch online

To celebrate the anniversary of Milestones, a one-off performance depicting research findings at UCL’s Bloomsbury Theatre Studio, Response Ability Theatre has made the play available to watch on their website. The performance inspired a petition to update the Homelessness Code of Guidance to guarantee a cot for all families in temporary accommodation with children under the age of 2, and that petition successfully passed through Parliament in February this year. Easyfundraising Together for Good initiative

Waitrose and easyfundraising have come Together for Good to give a funding boost to voluntary organisations, charities, and CICs. For one month only, they will donate five £1,000 funding pots. 🔑Key information: Every online shop at Waitrose is an entry into the prize draw. Plus, every shop will generate a donation – £10 if it’s someone’s first shop at Waitrose and £1.50 for every subsequent shop throughout October.
