VAC Quarterly Update – January 2023
Happy New Year!
It is a new year for Voluntary Action Camden, and the team is back and hard at work after enjoying a restful winter break.
Practical Help for Groups
In January we announced the launch of the VAC Consultancy Service, which serves as the new home for our core work providing expert, practical support to Camden voluntary and community organisations. We were also excited to announce a second round of the Camden Community Vaccine Project, delivered in partnership with the C4 Consortium. The project offers funding to local community groups to deliver initiatives encouraging vaccine take-up in the borough.
In addition to our frontline work, VAC is focused on delivering our core mission of providing support and information to the local VCS sector. Our staff and volunteers are constantly finding new funding opportunities to add to our website, and checking regularly that our expansive organisation directory is fully up-to-date.
Health Inequalities
The Care Navigation and Social Prescribing team has been busy as always, and the cost-of-living crisis remains a standout theme throughout their referrals work. The Social Prescribers Innovators Programme is proving to be a success, and the team has already placed 3 volunteers to support Care Navigators and Social Prescribing Link Workers.
The work VAC has been doing to embed Camden VCSEs in the new North Central London Health system is beginning to show results. As part of a VCSE Alliance Steering Group, we have been contributing input from our Voluntary Action Forums and work with local groups. This input is helping to shape new strategies like the Population Health Strategy in a more balanced and community friendly way, ensuring the voluntary sector is a key collaborator in the system. We will hold a VAC Forum in the near future to update and discuss these developments.
Safeguarding
As part of our Safeguarding Project, VAC has organised an upcoming programme of free training sessions throughout spring, on essential topics such as safe recruitment and advanced safeguarding knowledge. Our team members working in collaboration with Mind in Camden also continue to deliver great community outreach work, including hosting regular peer groups such as the Hong-Kongese Craft Group at Calthorpe Community Garden.
Future Priorities
Looking towards the future, we have lots of exciting work in the pipeline. Following our successful Trustee Appreciation Event, hosted with Camden Council and Volunteer Centre Camden back in November, VAC hears the call for increased support for local trustees. Collaborating closely with our partners, VAC is working towards creating a Trustee Network for increased connection, and offering a fully-stocked programme of support for trustees.
Lastly, VAC is aiming to create a regular programme of support and networking for voluntary and community Chief Executive Officers in Camden. We recognise that fulfilling the role of CEO can be challenging and often isolating work, especially during this tumultuous time for the sector. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events and resources designed to support the essential work of CEOs.

- Translated posters on warm welcome spaces – following your feedback (thank you!), these are now available in Arabic, Kurdish, Lingala, Somali, Swahili, Sylheti and Turkish and can be downloaded here. We’re also getting them translated into Ukrainian and Russian.
- Cost of living crisis advice bus: in collaboration with advice partners including Citizens Advice and Mary Ward Legal Centre, we’re running cost of living advice clinics from our vaccine bus across Camden over the next couple of months. More information can be found at gov.uk/winterevents.
- Video scripts: we know that residents really value hearing from trusted community leaders like yourselves so we are developing short video scripts to support you to record short videos to share key information and advice with residents. These will be available in English and community languages, with an ask to record a short video to share via local WhatsApp groups, voice notes and social media. We will share more information on this as soon as we can – if you speak another language and are keen to record a video, please let us know.
- Mental health advice leaflet
- Energy advice leaflet
- Food advice leaflet
Warm welcome spaces: thanks so much to those of you who are providing and/or helping to promote ‘warm welcome’ spaces, which provide a safe and warm space for residents this winter. If you haven’t already, please help us to promote these spaces with your local community. More information can be found at gov.uk/warmwelcome and posters can be downloaded here.
Camden Infrastructure Alliance (VAC, VCC, C4) Joint Statement: Cost of Living Crisis
The Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) provides essential support for those in need, but it also finds itself under enormous pressure as a result of the current cost-of-living crisis.
The pandemic disproportionately affected voluntary and community organisations that were already struggling to meet demands with insufficient resources. Before we have even begun to recover from the impact of the pandemic, the sector is faced with another crisis that may last even longer.
We are deeply concerned for the continued resilience of our sector and are calling for cross-sector unity and resistance to the much-anticipated reduction in public spending.
The government has announced immediate, short-term action to support households, businesses, and the charity sector cope with soaring energy bills. For many households this will not abate the financial strain they are facing, nor will it alleviate continued pressure on already stretched frontline services.
We welcome Camden Council stepping in to help residents least able to manage soaring energy bills and everyday costs. However, we urge the council to remember the community services that are often the first port of call for people struggling to make ends meet. Current funding in the community sector is not keeping up with inflation or the increasing costs of providing essential services in the community. From foodbanks to debt advice, mental health services to animal rescue, every part of the sector is experiencing both extraordinarily high demand and rapidly dwindling resources.
As hardship deepens, particularly with winter looming, some donors are finding that they are no longer able to contribute to charities. We know that some local food banks are seeing demand increase while donations are slowing down.
We are pleased that the Government has listened to the sector’s call for voluntary and community organisations to be included in support plans for businesses. As it stands, this support is only for six months, and all of the signs point to this crisis lasting much longer. We need a commitment to longer-term support to ensure financial stability and confidence.
The sector needs additional targeted financial support to deliver essential services, but we also want to work systematically with the council to tackle the crisis. Camden’s response to the pandemic highlighted the value of cross-sector collaboration. It also demonstrated the importance of forming partnerships built on trust across the public and VCS sectors. We are inviting the council to join us in developing strategic plans to support residents struggling to cope with the cost of living.
Camden’s VCS has consistently demonstrated its ability to respond quickly and efficiently. Nevertheless, the vital work of the voluntary and community sector simply cannot be spread any thinner.
We have the experience, community reach, ingenuity and resolve to tackle this latest crisis and ensure that meaningful support reaches those in need. As key infrastructure partners we will be working with the Council to ensure that perspectives of the VCS inform the council’s support for the sector.
