Castlehaven Community Association

Social prescribing has become an essential part of modern healthcare and community support. It’s great to see the voluntary sector playing such a pivotal role in this approach. By connecting individuals to community-based services and support, social prescribing helps address not just medical needs but also social and emotional ones.

The voluntary sector’s deep local connections and understanding of community needs mean they’re often best positioned to offer tailored support. Whether it’s through mental health services, social activities, or practical assistance, these organisations help bridge gaps in care and provide a more holistic approach to well-being. Their commitment and local knowledge are invaluable in creating a supportive network for residents.

Health Haven

A shining example is the Castlehaven Community Association, which has been a vital part of the community for many years, offering a wide range of support, from social events to food parcels as well as opportunities for volunteering and training. They serve people of all ages, and one of their standout programs is the Health Haven. We have referred numerous residents there, particularly those dealing with long-term health challenges and looking for ways to improve their physical and mental health. It provides a gentle introduction to exercise and wellness, helping individuals better understand their health conditions. Many people mistakenly believe that staying fit requires joining a gym, doing intense workouts, and paying for memberships, which can be both overwhelming and costly. However, with the Health Haven and its caring staff, individuals can enhance their health while also socialising, learning new skills, and becoming part of a vibrant community- all for free!
Well done to Castlehaven for making such a positive difference in the lives of so many residents through social prescribing. We look forward to seeing you continue your amazing work.

Climate change call to action issued to sector

The annual conference for The Association of Charitable Foundations, which took place this week, featured a discussion on the subject of how charities can respond to climate change. Attendees heard from a number of speakers and a variety of approaches, with some proposing that the sector should take more risks in response to the climate change emergency, while others focused on how charities can highlight the impact to normal people. You can read more about the issues raised here.

Report analyses digital exclusion concerns

82% of charities are concerned about digital technology excluding service users and volunteers, according to a new report from Charity Digital. The vast majority of charities now use digital tools and technologies in their work, but there is a substantial gap in the amount of services users and volunteers who are able to access them due to costs and lack of confidence in digital skills.

New guidance published for councils working with smaller charities

The Local Government Association, the umbrella body for local authorities, has released new guidance to improve the relationships between councils and smaller voluntary sector organisations. The guidance recognised that the the difference in size between councils and smaller charities can affect working relationships, and their guidance comes with a raft of recommendations for council officers and councillors to consider when working with small VCSE organisations.

Charities struggling to meet certain banking regulations

The banking experience for charities continues to come under spotlight after a report revealed particular problem areas. Interim CEO announcement

A message from our interim CEO, Dianne Carlton Ogunyemi:

Many of our community partners, members and colleagues know me from my work developing, planning and delivering training for the Community Safeguarding Project, which I have led in earnest since April 2018.

What started as a pilot project in response to the death of Victoria Climbié in 2000, has evolved and expanded into a personalised, responsive, and integral service; sensitive to the needs of its organisations, communities and groups, and I am proud of the work achieved so far.

With the departure of our CEO Keith Morgan, I am honoured to accept the role of interim chief executive officer at VAC, and deeply appreciate the trust and confidence the board have placed in me during this important period of transition.

While our trustees complete the final stages of recruitment for our new CEO; on behalf of the entire team at VAC I would like to express our gratitude to Keith Morgan for his passion drive and leadership. We wish him all the best and wait to hear of the fantastic work he will go on to achieve at Prostate Cancer UK.

The safeguarding of children and young people has been my passion for the past 15 years, and this will continue to take centre stage with the renewal of the CSP contract, funded by Camden’s Safeguarding Children’s Partnership this year. Thank you to the partners, co-workers, former colleagues, new and old friends for your kind words, encouragement and promise of ongoing support.

As we move forward, I am committed to ensuring the team are supported and strengthened while we navigate this period of transition together.

Best wishes to all.

Dianne

Charity Commission CEO issues guidance on trusteeship
CEO of the Charity Commission, David Holdsworth, has released a letter urging all councils in England and Wales to review the legal responsibilities of charity trusteeship. The letter accompanies recent guidance and includes practical steps to take so that councils that are trustees of charities can ensure they are acting correctly, after a number of costly recent cases involving local authorities and charitable land.

Issues and opportunities for membership-based charities
New research into charities utilising membership-based models has collected a number of insights into how such models have a positive impact but also raise spaces for growth. The Strength in Numbers report, published by consultants Lucent, analysed different membership-based charities and talks about the ways membership can provide stability and trust, but also how some versions of the model can be outdated and create barriers.

UK children show low life satisfaction, report says
A new report from The Children’s Society has been released, which reveals stark findings about child wellbeing in the UK. The report collected and analysed data from a number of sources, and gives insights into children and young people’s relationships with family and school, as well as comparing for gender and with other European countries. You can read The Good Childhood Report here.

Communications Survey!

We’re really keen to hear from you about how we communicate – through our newsletter, our social media, our emails and otherwise. We will be sending out a survey next week with a few key questions which will give us some valuable insights into how and what you want to hear from us. The survey will be short and sweet and should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. We’d be really grateful if you could take some time out to give us your perspective.

Sector leaders publish letter supporting riot-hit communities
A collection of 58 leaders of international development charities have released an open letter pledging support to communities affected by recent riots and attacks. The letter was published by Bond, a charity that acts as a network for organisations working in international development, and expresses determination to strengthen anti-racist action in the sector and speaks on wider political and humanitarian crises.

Research indicates high level of public trust in charities
The Charity Commission have published research into the level of public trust in charities. Their findings reveal that the public trust in charities is at it’s highest since 2014, and cited that that information about how money is spent by a charity is the single most important factor for most people. The research also investigated trustee awareness of their responsibilities and their relationship with the Commission.

BHF find joy with “micro-volunteering”
Sarah Boardman, retail volunteering operations manager at the British Heart Foundation, wrote recently about how the charity has discovered and embraced trends in flexible shift patterns for volunteers. Increasingly BHF are finding that, for younger people especially, “micro-volunteering” is very popular – irregular and ad-hoc shifts rather than formal or long term patterns.

Culture Secretary contacts charities after traumatic week
Lisa Nandy paid tribute to the efforts of civil society organisations in responding to the targeted racist attacks of the last few weeks. The new Culture Secretary met with representatives from charities and faith groups, and also released a written statement supporting groups that continued to provide services and foster community spirit despite the risk of violence and intimidation.

A reminder that The London Communities Emergencies Partnership and partners are building a list of resources for charities and community groups due to the heightened concerns around disinformation, discrimination and violence in London.

76% of Black & ethnic minoritised-led organisations report missing out on funding due to race or ethnicity
Responses to a survey by Pathway Fund revealed that 76% of black and ethnic minoritised-led organisations reported being refused funding because of their race or ethnicity. Project director of Pathway Fund, Dilys Winterkorn, commented that the findings show “systemic obstacles in accessing mainstream financial support”.

Difficult for charities to find operational space
A recent survey has demonstrated how difficult it is for charitable organisations and volunteer groups to find and secure a space to operate from. The survey was carried out by Temporary Use Aid, an organisation that matches charities with empty properties, and found that 73% of civil society organisations reported that it had been moderately or extremely difficult to look for physical spaces.

Camden is no place for hate – Resources and support issued in response to riots
Charities across the country are experiencing challenges to their everyday operations because of the riots taking place across the country. We know from speaking to some of our members that you are concerned about the threat of violence against your organisation, staff, volunteers, and service users. Many areas of the sector have been impacted, including faith-based organisations and those who deliver asylum and refugee services. Youth charities have also been affected, with some summer clubs and breakfast clubs considering closing which would inevitably leave those who need support the most without vital services.

We know that at the forefront of your minds will be supporting your service users, but we do also want to stress the importance of prioritising your people: The safety and security of your staff, volunteers and the people you support is paramount. So we urge you to have a look at the basic suggestions of how to keep your people safe we’ve circulated from VCS Emergencies Partnership.

We will be coordinating two distinct offers in relation to this issue:

  1. Collating training opportunities, resources, and guidance from critical sources for the sector including, VCS Emergencies Partnership (VCS EP) and London Communities Emergency Partnership, Hope Not Hate, and UK Youth – covering a range of topics including, how to offer initial basic support and signposting to victims of hate crime; and Staying Safe amidst Far-Right violence particularly for organisations supporting people seeking asylum, and refugees.

  1. We are keen to work in partnership with our colleagues in the Camden VCS infrastructure sector to provide a space for Camden VCS to share and learn how people are responding to the issue and maintaining social cohesion. This would be for the whole sector including faith-based VCS orgs, and youth VCS orgs. We look forward to sharing more details with you in the coming days.

In the meantime, please take a look at these statements from a number of sources, which give responses and collate resources, practical support and guidance for anyone affected:

– London Plus have produced a document listing resources to support the voluntary, community and faith sectors. You can email them on info@lcep.london with suggestions for the document. They also ask that anyone who has information on vulnerable locations or communities that may be affected fill out this form.
– The Charity Commission have issued a statement including practical guidance in case of emergencies.
– A statement from Camden Council with a list of emergency services information and community support.
Mayor of London communities newsletter including a message from Debbie Weekes-Bernard London’s Deputy Mayor for Communities and Social Justice.

VAC CEO leaving message
A person in a suit Description automatically generated

It is with a heavy heart that I share this last post. I’m leaving VAC to join Prostate Cancer UK as their new Associate Director of Black Health Equity. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as CEO for the past few years, and I will always treasure the memories I have made here. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support during my tenure. I could not have asked for a better borough to work in and a more passionate group of colleagues to work with. The sector has continually demonstrated, with limited resources, the important role it plays in keeping people connected and healthy. During my time VAC committed to highlighting the importance of the sector to the community and championing its needs. I am proud of the accomplishments we have made together particularly, supporting and looking after each other during the sequential crisis  of
the pandemic, cost-of-living, and record level inflation. During the toughest periods of the last few years, we have been standing shoulder to shoulder with our members. I know that VAC will continue to do so, by shouting about the value of the VCS to civic society, the economy, public health, and social cohesion.

The new CEO will be announced soon, but in the meantime, Dianne Carlton Ogunyemi (dogunyemi@vac.org.uk) has been appointed as interim CEO and will do a fantastic job!

Message to the next CEO:

You are going to have so much fun – here’s three reasons why:

1. VAC is at the forefront of the voluntary community sector in Camden. It has a proud history of serving communities in Camden, and it is well positioned as a strategic leader for the sector. ‘With great power comes great responsibility’ and VAC has never shied away from this. You will be joining VAC at a pivotal moment as it broadens its membership offer and deepens its relationship with the council through 7 years of secured core funding.

2. VAC’s staff and trustees are passionate about their work and committed to seeing the organisation grow. Through the toughest of times the team has shown resilience and vision. They know why they are here and what needs to be done to achieve the organisations aims and objectives. You will be inheriting an unmatched team of skilled, diverse and collaborative individuals.

3. We Make Camden. The voluntary and community sector in Camden is strong with over 2,000 organisations. The sector embodies Camden’s popular image of being rebellious and pioneering. VAC’s members are supportive and engaged and will guide you through this exciting new chapter.

I’ve had a great time at VAC, and I know you will too. Every day was different but was always filled with examples of how we are improving the lives of our community.

These are also reflected by our broader look at the sector and a statement on workforce challenges and the climate emergency from Camden Council’s Head of Community Partnerships John Muir.

Our report introduces you to the key groups and networks we lead, such as the CEO network, New Group network and Ukraine Refugee Response. There’s also information on how we represent the sector at key strategic partnership groups. We end on a look to the future, with 12 key plans for our work going forward.

Small charities need new representative body
Panellists at the recent CIOF Fundraising convention have called for a new body to represent and support small charities, in the wake of the closure of the Small Charities Coalition and the Foundation for Social Improvement, two institutions that supported the small charity sector. The panel also spoke about the funding dilemmas faced by small charities, suggesting that funders are less likely to allocate funding as they fear small charities’ survival in the long run. Charity campaigning more strictly policed, review finds
Charity campaigning and protest rights are more facing more and more restrictions and tone policing, according to the first annual UK civic space review from Bond, the UK network for civil society organisations working in international development. The review found trends that increasingly clamp down on rights in key areas of civic society. Charities give reaction to King’s Speech
Groups and leaders across the sector have given a mixed review to last week’s King’s speech, in which the new government announced a raft of new bills last week. The children’s wellbeing and English devolution bills were on the whole well-received, although some pointed out where legislation could go further. You can find more reaction here.

We wanted to make sure anyone who missed it last week get’s a chance to look at our Annual Report for 2023. We’re really excited for you to find out about all the work we’ve been doing over the last year, from our Community Action Research Project to the new Innovation Award we launched for recruiting residents to volunteer in our Care navigation service. You can also learn about the partnerships we’ve build with amazing non-profit groups across Camden to support our diverse communities and provide fundamental services where they are needed.

Introductions from our chair of Trustees Benaifer Bhandari and our CEO Keith Morgan give insights on our key achievements and successes in 2023, as well as the challenges we’ve faced.

Large charities report gender pay gap data
UK organisations with over 250 employees have provided information on their gender pay gaps to the government. A study done by Civil Society has analysed what the latest data looks like for the charities involved, revealing that while the average median gender pay gap fell in 2023 (down to 6.8% from 7.2% in 2022), the mean gap remained the same as the year before, at 9.8% on average. The data also shows that the average median gender pay gap at charities was lower than the national average for all employees.

Experts warn of serious dangers involved in fundraising
Senior figures in fundraising organisations and think tanks spoke recently at The Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s annual convention about the often under-recognised threats of sexual harassment and harmful behaviours that female fundraisers face. The panel heard how 48% of women fundraisers have experienced sexual harassment at work in the last 2 years, and that cultural accountability procedures are fundamental for the profession to improve safety.
