Universal credit London advice project

Do you support people claiming universal credit in London? Do you work with people who struggle to access the benefits system (due to disability, language barriers or another reason)?
CPAG’s Universal Credit London advice project provides a free advice service and free training to frontline workers who directly support UC claimants living in a London borough.

The Charity Property Matters Survey 2020

Ethical Property Foundation runs free workshops across the country and has just launched its survey and all local groups are invited to complete it.
This Survey is the only research which asks all voluntary organisations in England & Wales specifically about their property assets and issues.
The 2018 Charity Property Matters Survey revealed:
• More Charities than ever before are renting from a commercial Landlord
• A third of charities believe property poses a high/ very high risk to their future

Volunteer with VAC and develop experience and skills in public health

VAC provide training, and work opportunities for Camden volunteers who can commit 2 hours per week.
We offer free Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) training to volunteer as a Community Links volunteer, part of a new Care Navigation and Social Prescribing service in Camden. Community Links volunteers signpost residents to community based activities and help with formal referrals where community based activities are needed alongside clinical care.

Camden New Journal Story Highlights Challenge of Finding Affordable Space

A story in this week’s CNJ highlights the dilemma’s posed by the need on one hand for community buildings to raise the rent needed to pay the council and on the other hand the ability of small commuity groups to afford the space.  VAC is involved in the council’s Rent Review (now called Community Spaces Framework) and has made the point that a healthy voluntary and community sector is dependent on the availability of affordable activity space.

Marmot Review: 10 years on

To mark the 10-year anniversary of the landmark study of health inequalities, Fair Society, Healthy Lives, the UCL Institute of Health Equity (IHE) has launched Health Equity in England: The Marmot Review 10 Years On, commissioned by the Health Foundation.
The report examines progress over the past decade in addressing health inequalities in England and proposes recommendations for future action.
While there has been progress in some areas since 2010’s Fair Society, Healthy Lives, there is growing evidence that health inequalities are widening and life expectancy is stalling.

Rebalancing the relationship: Moving from competition to collaboration – relationships between large and small orgs

This project, led by NCVO with input from London CVS Network has published the interim report and a useful summary. The project found that there are often tensions in the relationships between the smaller and larger charities, especially when they are serving the same communities.
Several participants expressed a concern that in relentlessly pursuing public sector contracts, some charities appeared to be too driven by market growth and succumb to mission drift. Others worried that charities sometimes failed to consider the impact of their competitive tendering strategies on the sustainability of other organisations valued by beneficiaries.

Have an idea to improve mental health and wellbeing at a community level? Thrive LDN has launched a grant scheme that is designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of Londoners who may experience higher levels of unfair treatment or discrimination. A Crash Course in Cloudspotting

Camden Community Festival Fund

The fund is now open for applications. All community festivals and events that receive a grant will also receive a waiver of all non-statuary fees and charges which include road closures, trading licenses and parking suspensions. The process for grant applications will be managed directly by Camden Events Service.

Right to Thrive small grants for community projects:

Have an idea to improve mental health and wellbeing at a community level? Thrive LDN has launched a grant scheme that is designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of Londoners who may experience higher levels of unfair treatment or discrimination. The scheme will award grants ranging from £500 to £10,000 in order to fund grassroots projects – by organisations or by individuals – that work with intersectional or marginalised communities.

University Scholarships for Camden Residents

Birkbeck, University of London, in Bloomsbury, is offering two scholarship places to Camden residents for any of their undergraduate courses starting in October. The deadline to apply is 31 May.
Hult International Business School, also in Bloomsbury, is offering Camden residents a fully-funded one-year intensive masters degree, which includes practical work experience. Start in September –  deadline to apply is 26 April.

Grants from The London Marathon Charitable Trust

The London Marathon Charitable Trust have announced £5.2m new funding to maintain and increase participation in physical activity by building, renovating or modernising facilities in London and Surrey.
~ Small Grants £5,000 – £50,000.
~ Major Grants £50,001 – £250,000.

Comic Relief and the Mayor of London: London Together fund

Third and final round of the three-year funding partnership.  London Together invests in sport for change approaches that aim to improve social integration. The fund supports work in London.
There are two aims for this round of funding: reducing social isolation and strengthening relationships between and within communities. Details here.
Applicants can apply for a minimum of £25,000 and a maximum of £150,000.
The deadline is 12 noon on Friday 13th March 2020.

Camden Community Festival Fund

The fund is now open for applications. All community festivals and events that receive a grant will also receive a waiver of all non-statuary fees and charges which include road closures, trading licenses and parking suspensions. The process for grant applications will be managed directly by Camden Events Service.
Deadline for grant applications is 29 February. All funding decisions will be announced by 31 March.

Right to Thrive small grants for community projects:

Have an idea to improve mental health and wellbeing at a community level? Thrive LDN has launched a grant scheme that is designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of Londoners who may experience higher levels of unfair treatment or discrimination. The scheme will award grants ranging from £500 to £10,000 in order to fund grassroots projects – by organisations or by individuals – that work with intersectional or marginalised communities.

Free Carbon Monoxide Awareness workshop

The Gas Safe Charity is working with the Royal College of Nursing to deliver a free half day carbon monoxide workshop at their headquarters near Oxford Circus tube. Volunteer with VAC and develop experience and skills in public health

VAC provide training, and work opportunities for Camden volunteers who can commit 2 hours per week.
We offer free Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) training to volunteer as a Community Links volunteer, part of a new Care Navigation and Social Prescribing service in Camden. Community Links volunteers signpost residents to community based activities and help with formal referrals where community based activities are needed alongside clinical care.

Health and Wellbeing Neighbourhood Assembly – Final report and reflections

In 2019 Camden’s Health and Wellbeing Board set out to develop a citizen-led neighbourhood approach to health and wellbeing. A Neighbourhood Assembly of local residents was established in the west of the borough to examine the key issues around health and wellbeing. This work was rooted in the context of both Camden 2025 and the NHS Long Term Plan

Satellite club funding workshop

The Physical Activity Team & London Sport are hosting a satellite club funding workshop next Wednesday from 16.00 – 17.30.
Satellite Clubs are focused on supporting an increase in the number of 14-19-year olds participating regularly in physical activity and sport for 1 hour a week for 30 weeks. Funding ranges from £3,000 – £5,000 and can include hall hire, coaching fees, equipment and admin.  Register here

Camden Council have launched a consultation relating to their proposal to renew the current borough wide additional house in multiple occupation (HMO) licensing scheme. The current scheme comes to an end on 8 December 2020.  The consultation will run until the 8 March 2020.

A fund to enable social enterprises, charities and community businesses to make a positive impact in UK communities. Grants are aimed at organisations that are unable to access mainstream funding.
RBS are offering seven £20,000 grants to allow organisations to develop projects that create direct social impact on a community with need, and that have potential to become a sustainable product or service.

Camden Community Festival Fund

The fund is now open for applications. All community festivals and events that receive a grant will also receive a waiver of all non-statuary fees and charges which include road closures, trading licenses and parking suspensions. The process for grant applications will be managed directly by Camden Events Service.
Deadline for grant applications is 29 February. All funding decisions will be announced by 31 March.

Social & Community Capital Grants

A fund to enable social enterprises, charities and community businesses to make a positive impact in UK communities. Grants are aimed at organisations that are unable to access mainstream funding.
RBS are offering seven £20,000 grants to allow organisations to develop projects that create direct social impact on a community with need, and that have potential to become a sustainable product or service.

Right to Thrive small grants for community projects:

Have an idea to improve mental health and wellbeing at a community level? Thrive LDN has launched a grant scheme that is designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of Londoners who may experience higher levels of unfair treatment or discrimination. The scheme will award grants ranging from £500 to £10,000 in order to fund grassroots projects – by organisations or by individuals – that work with intersectional or marginalised communities.

Therapeutic Gardener Volunteer

Solace are looking for volunteers to work with residents at a multiple needs refuge to maintain the beautiful and spacious garden. The women here have fled to refuge due to experiencing  Violence Against Women and Girls who also have additional barriers to accessing other services such as significant mental health support needs and/or problematic alcohol and/or substance use. This is a varied role based on the principal that plants and gardens can provide people with skills and is beneficial to their mental, emotional and physical and health.

VAC provide training, and work opportunities for Camden volunteers who can commit 2 hours per week.
We offer free Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) training to volunteer as a Community Links volunteer, part of a new Care Navigation and Social Prescribing service in Camden. Community Links volunteers signpost residents to community based activities and help with formal referrals where community based activities are needed alongside clinical care.

VCS Access to Camden Council’s Learning & Development

Camden have been reviewing the offer of learning and development (L&D) support to the VCS and are now in a position to extend the offer to more organisations working with Camden citizens.
L&D are working in partnership with the VCS to ensure the offer meets the needs of the sector and will be working to finalise arrangements over the coming months.
However, interim arrangements have been put in place to ensure access to key training such as level 1 Safeguarding, health and safety training and other key e-learning courses.  Please read the statement from Camden here.

Camden Community Festival Fund

The fund is now open for applications. All community festivals and events that receive a grant will also receive a waiver of all non-statuary fees and charges which include road closures, trading licenses and parking suspensions. The process for grant applications will be managed directly by Camden Events Service.
Deadline for grant applications is 29 February. All funding decisions will be announced by 31 March.

Community Connectors/Volunteers Recruiting Now

Elfrida Rathbone Camden is looking for volunteers (18+) to support parents and carers living in Camden. No qualifications necessary, just bags of enthusiasm and encouragement, plus a desire to help others. Out of pocket expenses paid.
We offer practical support at our drop-in and 1:1 sessions and organise occasional low-cost/free activities for parents and their children.

Kentish Town City Farm seeks Treasurer

Kentish Town City Farm is a community charity that helps city people connect with animals, nature and the environment. The farm is a four-acre site, alongside two railway lines in the Borough of Camden. With sheep, goats, chickens, geese, three horses, two donkeys, twopigs and a cow.
The Treasurer’s role is key to its professional oversight through the provision of advice on all aspects of financial management, reporting, controls etc.

Volunteer with VAC and develop experience and skills in public health

VAC provide training, and work opportunities for Camden volunteers who can commit 2 hours per week.
We offer free Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) training to volunteer as a Community Links volunteer, part of a new Care Navigation and Social Prescribing service in Camden. Community Links volunteers signpost residents to community based activities and help with formal referrals where community based activities are needed alongside clinical care.

Proposed changes to planned orthopaedic surgery

The consultation planning group are keen to try to work with potential groups they might engage with as part of the consultation. NCL are looking to link up with any meetings/events you might have from the end of January 2020 through to early April where the team could come and speak with service users or their families about the proposals. Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service User Survey

A survey for residents who are deaf or hard of hearing and registered with a general practice in Camden.
In part one CCG are asking deaf patients to give feedback on how they find the current provision of British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting services in Camden general practices.  Currently face to face interpreting services only.
In part two Camden Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is considering introducing Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) that can be used for routine appointments, dealing with admin and clinical staff in GP practices. VRI is when all participants are in the same location and the interpreter joins remotely.

The Log Books: The History of Islington’s LGBT Switchboard

Wednesday, 5th February 2020 6:30 – 7:30pm
The charity helpline Switchboard set up its first call room in Islington in 1974. The volunteers’ notes, known as the log books, are a unique archive of LGBTQ+ life in Britain, from dancing to sexual health. Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Grassroots Fund.

The £3m fund will focus on supporting existing VAWG-specialist grassroots organisations operating deep in London’s communities.
The Fund will formally launch in early March, but LCF will be holding a series of engagement events in January and February. Express your interest in attending these engagement events here.

The Mayor of London’s Shared Endeavour fund

This fund will support civil society organisations in London who are standing up against hate, intolerance and extremism.
Core objectives of the fund will be to support groups that
– are countering extremist narrative and offering positive alternatives
– are encouraging others to stand up to hate, intolerance and extremism
The fund will launch on Tuesday the 14th January 2020 with a range of grants.

Launch of IT and Digital Capacity Building Programme in the New Year

VAC, working in Partnership with CITA and WCIT, is excited to launch our new IT and digital capacity building for the sector. Taking on your priorities from our recent survey, we will be delivering a series of FREE 2 hour workshops covering a whole range of topics from getting started with new IT systems, social media use and strategy, website and CRM development through to data protection, compliance and digital strategy. We will be releasing the programme next week  and the workshops will be available to book via our website. The first two workshops are due to run on the 21st and 29th January.

Mental Health Awareness Training

Camden Council’s Physical Activity Team & The Pirate Castle have partnered to organise Mental Health Awareness Training delivered by Rethink.
This course is for organisations that deliver sport and physical activity in Camden. There is a £5 (plus booking fee) charge for this training as a commitment fee, £5 is refundable upon arrival at the course.

Arts 4 Dementia opportunity for people living with dementia and their companions.
