With its volume, reach and speed, social media can encourage millions of users to adopt extreme political or social positions. In this workshop, we will look at the impacts of online groups, tribes, and communities; how they polarise for profit, and at times validate dangerous behaviour.
With a focus on grooming, algorithms and the spread of disinformation that promotes division among communities, we will explore the role of safeguarding online in our increasingly digitalised world.
The session will give a background to social media harm and well as cover subjects on grooming gangs, the incel and femcel community, male body dysmorphia and the online harms bill.
Essential knowledge for all, but especially those who work with children and young people in the borough.
