Universal Credit is Coming

Universal Credit will be rolled out across Camden this month. The council have produced a UC guide which provides further information as well as a leaflet for residents (see attached PDF) that provides a summary of what UC is, who is likely to be affected and where to go for budgeting and digital advice and support.

Camden Can pledge

The Camden Pledge is a promise from an organisation to take action to help people who live and work in Camden to lead healthier lives, whether these are staff, residents, customers or colleagues.
The Camden Pledge is for every organisation and group in Camden, no matter how large or small.
Organisations promise to take two actions: one to make healthy food and drink more affordable and accessible, and one to encourage and enable physical activity.
Once an organisation has made their pledge they receive a certificate and window sticker to show they are a part of the scheme.  We also create a list of organisations/groups who have made a Camden Pledge and promote these via social media and online. Find out more at the Camden Can website.

Making the Most of Camden’s Training and Development Service

What are your priorities for our roads, cycle paths and transport networks in Camden? The Council has a new plan for transport in Camden from 2019 to 2041 and wants to know your views. Have your say in the consultation by Friday 14 December.

Nafsiyat Cultural Competency Workshops

These are aimed at counsellors/therapists who would like to strengthen their practice in this area.
The workshop will draw on clinical examples and work as well as the intercultural experience to put forward the processes involved in working at the juncture of the client’s inner and outer experiences.

Camden asks for views on measures to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping

Changes to the welfare benefit system, a shortage of affordable housing and increased private rents are all having an impact nationally, contributing to a homelessness crisis, which in the worst incidences can result in rough sleeping.
You can read the draft Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy online now. The online consultation is now open and will close on Monday 18 February 2019.

Free immigration advice at Latin American House on Tuesday 18th of December

To celebrate International Migrants Day on 18th of December, Latin American House is offering a free extra drop in immigration advice session from 3pm with their Spanish speaker in-house solicitor – there is also a Portuguese translator, in addition to their free regular drop-in sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Clarion Futures Community Grants Programme

Open until Friday the 8th of February 2019 for applications from community, voluntary and charitable groups that would like to deliver community projects
Clarion formed following the merger in 2016 of Affinity Sutton Group Limited and Circle Housing Group and is the largest housing group in the country and one of its biggest housebuilders. Through its Community Grants Programme – managed by Groundwork – it awards grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 to charities, community organisations and voluntary groups for projects which primarily benefit its residents.

The Wakeham Trust

The Wakeham Trust provides grants to help people rebuild their communities. They are particularly interested in neighbourhood projects, community arts projects, projects involving community service by young people, or projects set up by those who are socially excluded.
They favour small projects – often, but not always, start-ups and they try to break the vicious circle whereby you have to be established to get funding from major charities, but you have to get funding to get established.

Jewish Child’s Day Grants

Jewish Child’s Day aims to assist disabled, disadvantaged, neglected or abused Jewish children worldwide. Grants may be given for items of equipment or a specific project. Grants made must directly benefit children up to age 18.

Ibrahim Foundation

Ibrahim Foundation makes grants to organisations which aim to improve the quality of life for people and communities in the UK. They like to consider work which others may find hard to fund, perhaps because it breaks new ground, appears too risky, requires core funding
The grants range from £500 – £10,000. Extraordinary projects may receive grants up to £50,000.

The HS2 Camden Fund

The Camden Fund aims to strengthen the sense of place and alleviate the disruption of the development of HS2 Ltd. on local people by achieving one or more of the following aims:
1. A Happier and Healthier Camden
2. A Better Connected Camden
3. A Stronger Voluntary and Community Sector

Need a Meeting Room near Chalk Farm?

VAC now has 3 new rooms to hire out for Events/Training, etc. at our new base in the Charlie Ratchford Centre in Chalk Farm.
There is a large room for up to 60 people, ideal for large events, AGMs, conferences, etc.
The training room can hold up to 20 people comfortably for training/workshops
The Lounge is a open area for anything that is not confidential and can hold up to 20 people. Smartboard, level access throughout, reasonable prices.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

17th and 18th of December At VAC, Charlie Ratchford Centre.
Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are for everyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8-18. They will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, you can speed up a young person’s recovery and stop a mental health issue from getting worse.

VAC has recently moved to a new home at Charlie Ratchford Centre, Belmont Street, NW1. We are sharing the building with Camden Carers and Camden Disability Action.  It is a very busy building with lots of visitors and events.
We are recruiting volunteer receptionists to be the first point of contact for visitors. I You will be an important member of the VAC team of volunteers and staff and will have access to training and ongoing support.

Elfrida Rathbone Camden seeks Work Experience Support Volunteers

To accompany students from The Leighton College on their weekly work placement. Students typically spend two or three hours a week at their work placement, which can be in a shop, café, garden centre, office or other local venue. We are looking for volunteers who like working with young people to offer a minimum of a half-day a week to supporting a student at their work experience placement. Experience of learning disabilities and/or education would be an advantage but is not essential.

Child Mentor Volunteers Needed

The Kids Network is looking for fun, committed and passionate volunteers to make an impact to the lives of little Londoners. Our flexible year-long mentoring programme supports children aged 8-11 with their social and emotional development during the transitional period between primary and secondary.
As a mentor, you will:
~ Facilitate weekly 1:1 sessions of 1-3 hours.
~ Build confidence and resilience in your matched child
~ Connect with a community of mentors through peer to peer support.
~ Receive ongoing personal support from The Kids Network Team

Volunteer with VAC and develop experience and skills in public health

VAC provide training, and work opportunities for Camden volunteers who can commit 2 hours per week.
Voluntary Action Camden (VAC) is offering free Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) training to volunteer Health Advocates for Community Links, part of a new Care Navigation and Social Prescribing service in Camden. Community Links Health Advocates signpost residents to community based activities and help with formal referrals where community based activities are needed alongside clinical care.
Volunteers will have access to other health related training, and will be part of a large multi-disciplinary team that meets monthly to develop the service and explore health related issues. After 3 months, active volunteers will have opportunities to take up occasional paid sessional work alongside volunteering.
Placements are in GP practices and other community locations. In return for your commitment to the project, we offer support, out of pocket expenses and other professional development opportunities.
