Trustees’ Week

Next week is Trustees’ Week.  It is an opportunity to thank your trustees (management committee members) and let them know what support is available to them locally and nationally.  VAC offer a regular course for trustees with the Mary Ward Centre, run over six evenings every year and suitable for both new trustees and those who want to refresh their skills.  We also offer telephone advice and more. To network with other local trustees why not join the Camden Trustees Meetup Group?

Hate Crime Drop in Surgery

14th November 12-2pm Crowndale Centre, 218 Eversholt Street,  NW1
This services aims to provide a comprehensive ‘One Stop’ drop-in service for those experiencing and/or who may be at risk of a Hate Crime or experienced it in the past and fearful further incidents may occur. Hate incidents take many forms from verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, bullying or malicious complaints. The Sessions will be run in conjunction with Metropolitan Police, LGBT Forum, Community Security Trust (CST), Camden Council, Tell MAMA and Camden People First.

Camden Full Circle

Camden Full Circle think differently about ‘help’. Full training offered to become a volunteer facilitator.  See the Jobs and Volunteering section below for full details.

Saturday Social Hub Club

Every Saturday 1pm – 8pm
Meet friends, make new ones. Doing different activities each week. Chosen by you! Computing, chat, cookery, karaoke, pottery, drama, arts, crafts.

Employment support in the Capital: Routes into work and to progress

The event will explore how employment support for those seeking to enter employment and for those seeking to progress out of low paid work can contribute to reducing child poverty in London. In particular, it will look at the role of local authorities, the voluntary sector, and the GLA can play in joint working to improve services to many of London’s disadvantaged groups.

Hopscotch Asian Women’s Centre Appoints New Director

Benaifer Bhandari joins as Director of Hopscotch, bringing with her extensive charity management experience and an intrinsic understanding of the needs of Asian women in London, starting on the 12th of November. Thanks to the previous Director, Nezahat Cihan, for her work in growing Hopscotch in a challenging environment for voluntary sector organisations and Elizabeth Balgobin, Interim Director, for supporting Hopscotch through this transition.

Family Members Reference Group

Do health services understand the communication and support needs of people with learning disabilities?
Martin Emery from the Camden Clinical Commissioning Group and Anna Wright from HealthWatch will talk about the Accessible Information Standard and what people with learning disabilities and their carers can expect when using health services.

Living Wage Increases

The real Living Wage rates have just been announced as £10.55 per hour in London and £9.00 across the rest of the UK.
That is the minimum pay workers need to live with dignity. Find out more at the Living Wage website.

Mayor’s Seed Funding

Culture Seeds is the Mayor of London’s £1million small grants programme to help London’s local communities grow grassroots arts, culture and heritage projects across the Capital.
Culture Seeds is still open for submissions, offering grants of £1,000-£5,000 to small organisations, groups and individuals.
The programme will remain open until March 2020. There are no other deadlines and you can apply at any time.
Culture Seeds Roadshows will offer help and advice on applying.  Details here.

Said Foundation – Amal Grants Programme

Grants to support a variety of high-quality arts and cultural activities that aim to further the objectives of increasing understanding of Britain’s Muslim communities among people of other faiths and none and fostering a stronger sense of belonging in the UK among its Muslim communities. Details here.

The HS2 Camden Fund

The Camden Fund aims to strengthen the sense of place and alleviate the disruption of the development of HS2 Ltd. on local people by achieving one or more of the following aims:
1. A Happier and Healthier Camden
2. A Better Connected Camden
3. A Stronger Voluntary and Community Sector
We aim to inform applicants of the result of their application within 16 weeks. Applicants can submit applications at any point between midnight on the 15th May 2018 and midnight on the 14th May 2020. Full details at Camden Giving.

Two Safeguarding Courses from VAC

Interfaith Week 2018:  Safeguarding an Introduction:
Tuesday 13th November 9.30am-12.30pm.
As part of interfaith week, Voluntary Action Camden and the Community Partnership Advisory Service invite all community, faith, church and religious groups who have little or no previous knowledge of safeguarding policy to attend our free workshop.
Safeguarding: Developing existing knowledge and understanding.
Monday 10th  December – 9.30am-1pm
If you work frequently with children and their families, it is essential that your organisation has up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding legislation and child protection procedures. This Advanced course is designed to develop existing understanding of the safeguarding process.

Health and Safety Essentials – 21 November 2018

Wednesday, 21st November, 10:00am – 1:00pm
Do you have responsibilities for health and safety where you work? Do you want to know your rights when it comes to health and safety? And know how to enforce your rights? You get a certificate at the end of the course. Learn about:
The training is ideal for people new to health and safety or those wanting to refresh their knowledge. The course also covers all the requirements for running a community group safely. In particular, migrant workers or recent arrivals in the UK will gain important knowledge about their rights. Book here.

VAC can provide training, and sessional work opportunities for committed volunteers. Closing the Autism Gap in Camden

To encourage more third sector staff and volunteers to learn more about autism and dyslexia. Signs4Life are showcasing this local initiative to help staff and volunteers, in their work with vulnerable service users. Our next community workshop is taking place at Camden Town Library, Crowndale Centre, London, NW1 1BD, on Thursday 29th November 2018.

Volunteering Course With City Lit In partnership with Sidings Community Centre

The course is 5 weeks and will provide learners with the knowledge and understanding needed to be a successful volunteer.  It is suitable for those who want to take the first step into volunteering. There are limited spaces and we would encourage all applicants to apply online early.

Creative Workshop for Women

Friday 23rd November, 11am -1.30pm at Swiss Cottage Gallery
The workshop ‘Still Life In Sound’ will look at familiar and domestic objects as a starting point to draw out stories and associations to create portraits and sound recordings inspired by Katrina Hruskova’s show ‘The Waning Yoke’.
The workshop is open to all people who identify as women. No drawing or photography skills or previous experience necessary. More information here.

Armistice Commemoration  11th November

Join Michael Palin, Robert Powell and Lee Montague for a commemoration of The War to End All Wars, celebrating the indomitable spirit of those who fought and those who stayed behind, on the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. ‘Creating a Stronger Voluntary & Community Sector’

Monday, 10th December, from 5:30 – 7:30pm
Camden Giving has funding available through the HS2 Camden Fund for creating a ‘Stronger Voluntary and Community Sector’. We will share some tips and ideas about applications you could consider applying to us for under this strand so that you can begin to plan your project proposal.
This free workshop is aimed at not-for-profits with an income of less than £500k, whose projects/activities benefit Camden communities.

HolbornGymnastics Club seeks Qualified Coach

The club is part of Holborn Community Association and  delivers 12 sessions a week at Bedford House centre and a further 6 sessions across local schools.
We are looking for a fun, enthusiastic Level 2 General UKCC British Gymnastics qualified coach to take on the role of coaching an after school club.  Our current coach is due to take maternity leave from January and we need a coach to deliver sessions twice a week at St Aloysius Primary School.

Child Mentor Volunteers Needed

The Kids Network is looking for fun, committed and passionate volunteers to make an impact to the lives of little Londoners. Our flexible year-long mentoring programme supports children aged 8-11 with their social and emotional development during the transitional period between primary and secondary.
As a mentor, you will:
~ Facilitate weekly 1:1 sessions of 1-3 hours.
~ Build confidence and resilience in your matched child to manage feelings through a series of fun and positive experiences and activities.
~ Connect with a community of mentors through peer to peer support.
~ Attend large scale community events with your mentee.
~ Receive ongoing personal support from The Kids Network Team

Camden Full Circle seeks Volunteer Facilitators

As a Full Circle Volunteer Facilitator, you will
~ Work with the person or family wanting to make a change to find out what a good life could mean for them, and who in their life could help.
~ Help them organise a meeting with their people, they choose, and support them to make a plan so that changes can happen.
~ Support one Circle at a time, which takes about 2-3 hours a week for 8-10 weeks.
~ After that, you can take a break, or start helping another Circle.
~ Support circles for families, for older people or carers, for young people – or all three
You’ll receive full training, comprehensive support you’d expect from Camden’s voluntary and community sector organisations involved with this project and an opportunity to develop transferable skills to find employment as a family group conference coordinator

Little Village Opportunities

Volunteer with VAC and develop experience and skills in public health

VAC provide training, and work opportunities for Camden volunteers who can commit 2 hours per week.
Voluntary Action Camden (VAC) is offering free Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) training to volunteer Health Advocates for Community Links, part of a new Care Navigation and Social Prescribing service in Camden. Community Links Health Advocates signpost residents to community based activities and help with formal referrals where community based activities are needed alongside clinical care.
Volunteers will have access to other health related training, and will be part of a large multi-disciplinary team that meets monthly to develop the service and explore health related issues. After 3 months, active volunteers will have opportunities to take up occasional paid sessional work alongside volunteering.
Placements are in GP practices and other community locations. In return for your commitment to the project, we offer support, out of pocket expenses and other professional development opportunities.

Camden Full Circle

Camden Full Circle think differently about ‘help’. When people are having a tough time with something, things feel more manageable when people come together to help. Volunteering with Full Circle is a rewarding experience that makes a real difference to people’s lives by drawing on their own strengths together with the compassion of people who want to help them. Full Circle is a collaboration between Homestart Camden and Islington, Camden Carers Service and Camden Council. See the Jobs and Volunteering section below for full details of how to get involved.

Opportunities for older people to get their voices heard

Ageing Better in Camden get sent many invitations for older people to have their say in local consultations or focus groups. Many are one-off, two hour discussions with little commitment required.
There are a lot of interesting opportunities but there is no obligation – each person can choose the ones that interest them.  We will simply add their name to a mailing list and they can choose the opportunities they’d like to get involved in. For more information and to join contact us on:

Need a Venue near Chalk Farm?

VAC now has 3 new rooms to hire out for Events/Training, etc. at our new base in the Charlie Ratchford Centre in Chalk Farm.
The Dining Room can hold up to 60 people, this can be useful for any large social events, AGMs, conferences, etc.
The Buffet Room can hold up to 20 people comfortably for training/workshops
The Lounge is a open area for anything that is not confidential and can hold up to 20 people
