Castlehaven Community Association

Social prescribing has become an essential part of modern healthcare and community support. It’s great to see the voluntary sector playing such a pivotal role in this approach. By connecting individuals to community-based services and support, social prescribing helps address not just medical needs but also social and emotional ones.

The voluntary sector’s deep local connections and understanding of community needs mean they’re often best positioned to offer tailored support. Whether it’s through mental health services, social activities, or practical assistance, these organisations help bridge gaps in care and provide a more holistic approach to well-being. Their commitment and local knowledge are invaluable in creating a supportive network for residents.

Health Haven

A shining example is the Castlehaven Community Association, which has been a vital part of the community for many years, offering a wide range of support, from social events to food parcels as well as opportunities for volunteering and training. They serve people of all ages, and one of their standout programs is the Health Haven. We have referred numerous residents there, particularly those dealing with long-term health challenges and looking for ways to improve their physical and mental health. It provides a gentle introduction to exercise and wellness, helping individuals better understand their health conditions. Many people mistakenly believe that staying fit requires joining a gym, doing intense workouts, and paying for memberships, which can be both overwhelming and costly. However, with the Health Haven and its caring staff, individuals can enhance their health while also socialising, learning new skills, and becoming part of a vibrant community- all for free!
Well done to Castlehaven for making such a positive difference in the lives of so many residents through social prescribing. We look forward to seeing you continue your amazing work.

Climate change call to action issued to sector

The annual conference for The Association of Charitable Foundations, which took place this week, featured a discussion on the subject of how charities can respond to climate change. Attendees heard from a number of speakers and a variety of approaches, with some proposing that the sector should take more risks in response to the climate change emergency, while others focused on how charities can highlight the impact to normal people. You can read more about the issues raised here.

Report analyses digital exclusion concerns

82% of charities are concerned about digital technology excluding service users and volunteers, according to a new report from Charity Digital. The vast majority of charities now use digital tools and technologies in their work, but there is a substantial gap in the amount of services users and volunteers who are able to access them due to costs and lack of confidence in digital skills.

New guidance published for councils working with smaller charities

The Local Government Association, the umbrella body for local authorities, has released new guidance to improve the relationships between councils and smaller voluntary sector organisations. The guidance recognised that the the difference in size between councils and smaller charities can affect working relationships, and their guidance comes with a raft of recommendations for council officers and councillors to consider when working with small VCSE organisations.
