The Value of Small in a Big Crisis

A new report – The Value of Small in a Big Crisis – finds that #SmallButVital charities played a key role in supporting people and communities throughout the pandemic in a way that public services and mutual aid could not. The ways that small charities operate means they have responded effectively for people experiencing disadvantage, and that throughout the pandemic, small charities ‘showed up and stuck around’. You can see a great summary of the report findings in this Twitter thread and you can read the summary report by clicking here. The concise two page summary is here.

Medical Model Still Dominates

The medical model approach to health is still winning out over the social model.  Shielding, vaccination priority, PPE distribution etc are all determined by clinical vulnerability.  Despite early evidence that certain sections of the population were disproportionately affected, decisions are still being made purely on the grounds of clinical vulnerability (and here and here).  Last week it seemed that this might change but the medical model proponents won the day.  The one concession is that everyone on the learning disabilities register in England will now be invited for a Covid vaccine.

Are we ever going to create a Britain for everyone?

The former homelessness tsar thinks we need big, radical reform to tackle hunger, rough sleeping and poverty. And she has a plan. Full story in the Guardian.
