VAC administered Google Grants
VAC has been funded by Google to help small organisations get back into the “real world” training / meeting environment.
The intention is to help very small voluntary and community organisations get back into buildings by helping them afford the hire fee, and also assist them with technical advice if they want to run ‘blended’ events and meetings.
Groups can book space for a single event or block book a series of dates for future meetings and events worth up £300 per quarter.
VAC is administering the scheme. Our intention is to keep the process as simple as possible to minimise any administrative burden on the groups, VAC and of course the organisations providing space.
Not all venues are part of the scheme so please do check out our room hire directory here
For more information and to see if your group is eligible visit our website here or contact Ricky at rsingh@vac.org.uk

Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre: Cultural Competence Workshops via Zoom
Various dates
This workshop aims to enhance participants’ self-awareness, empathic knowledge and understanding of other cultures.
These workshops draw on clinical examples and work as well as the intercultural experience to put forward the processes involved in working at the juncture of the client’s inner and outer experiences. The evocation of shame and avoidance in the dyadic or group encounter of intersecting differences and sameness will also be explored. “Any clinical encounter that does not take into account the client’s whole life experience and does not consider their race, culture, gender or social values, can only fragment that person.” (Jafar Kareem, co-founder of Nafsiyat Intercultural Therapy Centre). In the workshop Jafar’s quote will be applied to societal/individual assumptions with regards to racism and sexism. There will be an opportunity for participants to work on some of their own material from their practice.

Holiday 2021 Update to Members and Subscribers

17th December 2021

A Blended Year…

2021 has been another difficult year as pandemic continues. We have all experienced hope and worry, highs and lows. We have done some things in person, while others things have remained firmly online. What is considered the normal and everyday has changed for all of us.
It has been a blended year in so many ways.
Despite the circumstances VAC and the voluntary and community sector has had a successful year as we all continue to serve our local communities. If you’d like to learn more about the VAC year, please read our Autumn update here.
We are also excited by the arrival of our new CEO Keith Morgan. The first chance to meet Keith was at last Wednesday’s VAF where Keith introduced himself and answered questions. If you missed it, you can view the recording here
We have an exciting new website which we launched in November and whatever the new year brings we are in a good position to continue our work.
The year could also be considered blended for us because, while we are thrilled to be welcoming Keith, it is with sadness that we say goodbye to Kevin Nunan and thank him for the many years of incredible work both with VAC and within the sector as a whole.
Whether you will be continuing to work next year or are planning new adventures we hope you are able to have an enjoyable and relaxing festive period.

Have your say on the development of Camden and Islington’s Trauma Informed Network:
Are you involved in health and social care in Camden and Islington, either as a staff member or have experience of using services? We’re interested in your views on how this network can become trauma-informed.
The research involves filling in 6 online surveys (each 10-30 mins) 1-2 weeks apart, between Dec-February.
The results will help to shape what the Trauma-Informed Network needs to focus on and what actions we’ll take next, so it’s really important for the research to be informed by lived experience.

Autumn 2021 Update to Members and Subscribers

3rd December 2021

Meet our New CEO

VAC is very pleased to welcome Keith Morgan as the new CEO of Voluntary Action Camden.  He brings extensive leadership experience in the voluntary and community sector, as both a Trustee and Chief Executive.   You will all know Keith already as the CEO of  Young Camden Foundation. He has a background in youth work and has also worked in Strategy and Change at Camden Council.  Keith has considerable  knowledge of the local sector and leadership experience.
The next Voluntary Action Forum on 15th December will be an opportunity to meet Keith and ask him questions.  Don’t miss it!

Meet Keith at our next Voluntary Action Forum on 15th December at 11am.
This forum will continue the work on creating a VCS Manifesto that we started back in May.  This is a chance to finalise Manifesto in time for 2022.  Come and let us know what you think the VCS should be demanding.  Book here.

Camden Health and Wellbeing Board

VAC made a presentation to the Health and Wellbeing Board’s October meeting on the Camden Care Navigation and Social Prescribing system.  You can view the presentation here

Policy Updates

Rents and Leases Review

Negotiations between the council and the sector have resumed.  We have had draft Heads of Terms of the proposed new lease and a group of VCS leaders (including Hopscotch, Women+Health, the Winch, QCCA and HCA) have engaged Peter Korn of Interface to give us legal support.
Discussions on a social value framework have also taken place but there are no concrete proposals to share yet.

Health

Development of the new Integrated Care Systems continues ready for the 1st April start.  The Camden Local Care Partnership Board and Health and Wellbeing Board are working on borough level strategies.  The Community Connectedness strategy (first covered in the VAC Spring Quarterly Update and then updated in Summer Update ) and Neighbourhood strategy (see next item below) may be brought together to aid efficiency and avoid duplication as there are many overlaps.
NCL’s new Community Partnership Forum (a body to involve residents and the community) has now met twice.
The Health and Wellbeing Board is consulting on a new Health and Wellbeing strategy.  VAC recently held a consultation event for the VCS. You can view the event here.  There’s still time to have you say (before 13 December).  Email your comments to Donna Turnbull or share your thoughts on our wall (below).

Neighbourhoods Development

There are now working groups in 5 neighbourhoods taking forward the Neighbourhoods strategy work.  The neighbourhoods are:
  • NW3
  • NW5
  • Central (around Somers Town)
  • South (Bloomsbury)
  • West Hampstead
If you work in any of those areas and would like to get involved please contact VAC (info@vac.org.uk) and we will put you in touch with the relevant steering group.

Hang on!  If this is all looking like an alphabet soup of acronyms then take a moment to look at our short presentation explaining what the new NHS structures mean and what they are trying to achieve.  View it here.

…and finally

If you’ve attended any of our events recently you will know that we are trying to make all of our events  blended, hopefully getting the best of both worlds with a small group in a meeting room and many still joining remotely by zoom.  It’s an important step on the road back to normal.  Our plan is to share what we’ve learned and support you to make the move to blended meetings as well.

Don’t forget – we are now based at the Greenwood Centre:
Greenwood Centre, Greenwood Place, London
NW5 1LB
Phones and emails remain the same

Kevin & the VAC team: Alex, Dianne, Donna, Hasel, John, Mandira, Manuella, Nasrin, Ricky and Zubair and all the Trustees and Volunteers.

Resilience Fund: Grant Support for Voluntary and Community Organisations in Camden

Deadline for the Stage 1 applications is 11pm on 29th November 2021
Camden Council have launched a new grant programme called The Resilience Fund. The Community Impacts Resilience Fund is in response to feedback that we have had from the VCS and offers financial support to local organisations that are struggling financially because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
It also provides support for new partnerships and innovative ways of working, which have been developed within the sector in response to the challenges of the pandemic.
In 2021/22 there are two strands of funding available in the Community Impacts Resilience Fund:
~ Recovery Fund: Grants of up to £15,000 to support organisations to return to business as usual. Funding can be used to cover day-to-day costs such as staffing, rent and utility bills. A total of £600,000 is available through this fund.
~ Partnership and Networks Fund: Grants of up to £10,000 to support organisations to develop existing or to establish new partnerships and collaborations within the community. Applications can be made as individual organisations, partnerships or networks. The fund can also be used to cover core costs associated with this work such as staffing, rent and utility bills. A total of £150,000 is available through this fund.
The grant application process is in two stages and groups that are successful at Stage 1 or the Expression of Interest, will be invited to submit a Stage 2 application. We would particularly like to encourage bids from small organisations working with Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities.
