Financial Impact on the Camden VCS Survey; Accessing Government Grants; Use the Volunteer Brokers to get volunteers for your organisation; Government Funding Package update; Resources + funding and more

Feature

If Nothing Else Look at These 3 Things

1. It’s really important that when we make the case for the sector that we have a good picture of the financial impact the Covid-19 emergency has had on organisations.  So please take our Financial Impact Survey.

2. The Government support grants to businesses have been tied to those with premises and there are complicated rules making it hard for charities who may well be eligible to access the funds.  We have some detailed guidance.

3. A team of volunteer brokers is now up and running.  The Camden‘Volunteer Brokerage’ service can help match volunteers with voluntary and community organisations who have a need for verified/ vetted volunteers. The service will also help to verify or carry out new DBS check with volunteers. You can use the Brokerage service to request volunteers with specific skills or background for community activity.

Government funding package latest

The latest update on the government funding package for charities is that funding for small charities delivering essential front-line covid-19 support will, where possible, be delivered locally – more details as soon as we have them.  This is in addition to funds being distributed though Awards for All and an adapted Reaching Communities fund – details here National Lottery Community Fund (6 months – £10,000 to £100,000). Other funders are still creating new funding opportunities (see links under Funding), such as the Big Local £50,000 fund being distributed in Somers Town by the ST Big Local.

Our Letter Urging Support for the Sector

VAC has written a letter to the CNJ urging both central and local government to ensure that there is sufficient support for the many voluntary and community organisations that have responded to the Covid-19 emergency.  Read it here.

SHP Camden Recovery Service & Islington Aftercare

We are here to support Camden and Islington residents who are in recovery from substance use issues. We help individuals to explore their education, training, volunteering and employment goals and work with them to develop a personal plan to help achieve them.
Whilst our Camden Square offices are currently closed, we are still available to offer tailored 1:1 support via telephone and online. In addition our clients will have access to our online group programmes which include a weekly women’s group, recovery group and personal development workshops.

May Day Greetings

Ironically in the year when workers’ contribution to society has never been more obvious there will be no May Day this year.  The May Day bank holiday has been switched from Monday 4th to Friday 8th May.  The switch was made by Royal Proclamation after many diaries had gone to press so printed diaries may be wrong.  The switch was intended to commemorate VE Day with street parties, pub toasts and bell ringing, but due to social distancing these have been cancelled (the only other time May Day was switched was also to commemorate VE Day in 1995).   Torriano Meeting house is still celebrating May Day with poems from Camden poet, Dinah Livingston – Commons and Rety.

Voluntary Action Camden Spring 2020 Update to Members and Subscribers

Spring 2020 Update to Members and Subscribers

24th April 2020

Camden Covid-19 Special

The streets may be empty but for many it’s never been a busier time as local organisations and community groups step up to respond to residents in need.

Funding

The council has put £100,000 into an emergency fund that was distributed by Camden Giving last week.  Camden Giving raised an additional £200,000.  A further funding round is planned for June.  Groups are also accessing Community Infrastructure Levy funds at ward level (talk to your councillors).
London Funders have come together to create an Emergency Response Fund.  Wave 2 has 2 strands – Crisis Response and Delivering Differently.
We have links to many other funds but they are all being flooded with requests.
The extra funding that the chancellor announced will be distributed through the lottery – we should hear more any day now.
Sector leaders are still pressing for the furlough scheme to allow furloughed staff to volunteer for their own organisation.
Clarity is needed around business rates grants – some charities may qualify.

New VCS Forum

The first Camden Voluntary Action Forum was held on Wednesday and the participants voted to hold another in a fortnight’s time on Wednesday 6th May at 11am.  There was a chance for everyone to share an update.  VAC’s update covered our work, how the council is responding and mention of social prescribing.  Take a look here.

Voluntary and Community Groups Respond

Many organisations have stepped up to respond to the crisis. Age UK Camden and London Irish Centre were quick to mobilise and have been ensuring that vulnerable older people are getting food parcels.
VAC has put together a Covid-19 Community Directory from your updates; We have also created a daily update page and resources pages.
The Community Directory shows how many local organisations have changed the way they work in order to support vulnerable residents during the crisis.
The Care Navigation and Social Prescribing system in Camden (Community Links run by VAC and Care Navigators run by AUC and Wish+ by the council) has been taking many more referrals from both GPs, self-referrals, and from concerned family members.
We are working with the Council, Volunteer Centre Camden and others to help local organisations access all the volunteers who have signed up to help.
The Food banks have been stretched to supply demand and over the Easter weekend the Red Cross restocked Camden Foodbanks that were running low.
So many local voluntary organisations and community groups have been active in support of their local community that they are too numerous to mention here. Rest assured that the sector’s swift response has been noted at national level.

Needs of Organisations

As part of the survey of how organisations have responded we also asked for support needs.  The key concerns were
• Time is of the essence
• Clear information needed
• Contact points and referral pathways
• Payments and money

Camden Coming Together to Support Vulnerable People

Around the country the voluntary sector, councils and health authorities are racing to put in place joined up systems to ensure food and medicines get to the vulnerable.
The most vulnerable are on a government list and are being supplied by a council led programme using the London Irish Centre as a base and working with AgeUK Camden as well.
The least vulnerable who are online and have funds are using friends, neighbours and local WhatsApp groups to keep themselves supplied and collect prescriptions.
However, there is a middle group who either aren’t online or don’t have funds (or can’t access their funds right now as they can’t get to a cash machine).  This group will increasingly rely on our sector over the coming months.
How this system will work is still emerging.  Contact points and referral pathways are still being developed.  Who can help locally and how volunteers are accessed and managed are all issues that are steadily becoming clearer.

Keep in touch and up-to-date via the e-bulletin and @onecamden twitter.  We have a comprehensive COVID-19 update page that is updated daily and is full of useful resources.
