Feature 

Life in ‘Lockdown’

In March 2020, the country went into ‘Lockdown’. Services closed their doors to all but the most urgent cases and concentrated efforts on responding to the Covid-19 crisis. Residents were confined to their homes and it prompted a substantial shift to remote access to work, education, and care.
Healthwatch Camden surveyed residents from April to the end of July  In total 1,600 Camden residents told Healthwatch Camden about their experiences of ‘Life in Lockdown.’  Read the full report here.

 

 

Funding News

The Return to Play Fund is a major fund from Sport England in 3 strands that aims to help organisations get activities going again by paying for extra costs and adjustments. Power Partners is looking for partners to help tackle fuel poverty. The Youth Futures Foundation deadline is 9th November. Details in the Funding section below.

Trustees’ Week 2020

It’s Trustees’ Week next week.  Trustees are the people who control charities and usually meet 6 or 10 times a year. It’s a great time to become a trustee; Hopscoth, VAC, Women and Health, Henna and many more are currently recruiting (see Jobs and Volunteers section below).

Community Champions

Elfrida Rathbone Camden has been commissioned to engage with residents of Kentish Town specifically in and around the Peckwater, Torriano, Oseney and Kenbrook estates.
The aim is to recruit local residents to volunteer to become Community Champions who will help people access existing and new activities and services in their area. Volunteers can be involved as much or as little they wish; will gain skills and have access to high quality training and courses.

BTEG’s Covid-19 Response Capacity Building Project

BTEG have developed a range of sustainability and capacity building support for B.A.M.E organisations nationally. The support will be targeting small B.A.M.E-led civil society groups across England working directly to support people at high risk of the virus, have faced a significant increase in demand and/or have limited capacity to focus on internal developments and planning.
You will get access to up to 4.5 hours of free expert consultancy support and/or coaching specific to your organisational needs as well as access to up to 20 organisational and leadership development workshops. Free Zen Sessions

11th & 12th November 10am – 3pm
Qualified instructors guide people through short (11 minute), simple  ‘Zen Sessions’ which leave participants feeling lighter, calmer and empowered to try some of the simple techniques at home.
Focussing on a wide range of outcomes from easing anxiety through to mood boosting and increasing happiness

Free Walk Leader training

Camden Council’s Active Living team are offering free training to become a qualified Rambler’s Walking for health leader, and support to set up a new walking group. Walking groups will be covered  for health insurance, and will be part of the accredited national walking for health programme.  A friendly and accessible way for local people to get gentle exercise and make new friends.
Additional funding is available to set up walks from Camden GP Surgeries as part of a TFL project.  Please register your interest here

Camden early help friends workshop

Wednesday, 4th November 2020, 12:30 – 14:00, (MS Teams)
If you want to understand what family early help is and how Camden’s early help service works please book on this online workshop by emailing learning@camden.gov.uk
The workshop will be delivered by Becca Dove, Head of Family Support and Complex Families (LB of Camden). It will cover who family early help is for, what it does, how to get it, and the role we all play in helping families to get the help they need as early as possible.

UCL students to run Student-Led Projects.

UCL students are looking for 5 London-based organisations to partner with.  This is an opportunity to provide your beneficiaries with access to UCL students and for you to tailor the project to your current needs.
Each Project supported has the opportunity to apply for up to £750 worth of funding, access to  safeguarding training as well as a dedicated Project Supervisor to support them with the development of their project.
Due to the pandemic, all Projects will operate remotely until further notice.

Kickstart a young person’s career

Can you offer a young person a 6 month work placement?  Kickstart is government initiative aiming to create thousands of work placements with employers, including those in the voluntary sector.   The government will pay the salaries of young people in placements for 25 hours and at minimum wage. The grant includes £1,500 towards training costs for young people.  The Council can apply for the grant on your behalf and help you plan your placement.  To find out more please email kickstart@camden.gov.uk or call Mark Booth on 020 7974 5018

Return to Play Fund

The £16.5 million fund is split into three strands and brings our total support for the sport and physical activity sector to more than £220m.
The Return to Play Fund will support groups, clubs and organisations who’ve been impacted by restrictions brought in to tackle the pandemic.
£10m – Return to Play: Small Grants. £300 and £10,000 to help sport and activity groups, clubs and organisations respond to the immediate challenges of returning to play in a Covid-19-safe environment.
£5m – Return to Play:  £10,001 to £50,000. It’ll help local sports clubs and organisations to adapt and open important places and spaces that can help them welcome back their local community safely.
£1.5m – Return to Play: Active Together. This crowdfunding initiative will help sports clubs and organisations set up their own campaigns.

Power Partners Community Investment Fund

Are you an organisation supporting vulnerable members of communities & help people facing fuel poverty, particularly during the current pandemic? Apply to Power Partners for a grant of up to £20,000 in Round 3 of UK Power Networks fund. Full guidance here

CAF Resilience Fund

The CAF Resilience Fund exists to help charitable organisations in England that support the people hardest hit by Covid-19. This fund will support those working with vulnerable and disadvantaged groups such as those living in deprived areas, those supporting Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and people with disabilities.Grants range from £10,000 to £100,000 to deliver rapid relief from the impact of Covid-19. and you must be able to spend the grant money before 31 March 2021.  Full details at Cafonline.

Somers Town Greening Fund 2020

Are you a resident in Somers Town with an idea for a green space in Somers Town? Somers Town Big Local have created the Greening Fund – it is now live and accepting applications. The fund is for groups of residents who want to create new green space or revive old green spaces in Somers Town. The fund will make grants of up to £3000. Deadline Monday 23rd  November at 5pm

The Voice4Change England Covid-19 Partnership Fund

This fund is for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community groups and organisations, working to deliver COVID-19 services in England.
This grants programme is designed to help tackle the disproportionate impact of COVID 19 on BAME communities.
Grants between £5000 and £10,000 will be considered.

Youth Futures Foundation

Youth Futures Foundation’s Development and Impact Grant Funding is still open.  Applications must be submitted by the 9th November for a decision by the 31st December.  Good news is that the Youth Futures Foundation’s level of financial support has changed to:
£30,000 – £150,000 pa for delivery of their development grant for 50-150 young people per year, duration 1-2 years.
£100,000 – £1.2m pa for delivery of their impact grant for 150+ young people per year, duration  1-5 years.  Further information here.

Build Up Fund 2020-21│ Youth Crime Prevention & Organisational Development Grants.

Young Camden Foundation in partnership with Camden Council Community Impacts has launched the Build Up Fund. This fund aims to support local youth organisations to access comprehensive and appropriate training in three distinct areas 1) Youth crime prevention, 2) Collaborating or sharing best practice on youth crime prevention schemes and 3) Organisational sustainability.
Camden based organisations working with children and young people can apply for grants of between £500 up to £3,000 up to 30th Nov. See more here

Camden Voluntary Action Forum (web page here)

The forum is open to all Camden voluntary and community  groups and organisations, community activists, social entrepreneurs, volunteers and anyone interested in local voluntary action. The Forum currently meets monthly online on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 11am.

An Introduction to Safeguarding for Trustees (Virtual Webinar: Wednesday 4th November – 10am – 11.30am)

As part of Trustees Week 2020, VAC presents this Safeguarding Introduction to help support trustees in this fundamental part of operating any organisation; a requirement even if you do not work directly with children.
This session aims to highlight the Charity Commission’s legal safeguarding expectations for all trustees and ensures that organisations are doing all they can to protect children and young people who may be at risk. Book here.

Fully-funded university places with Camden Scholarships

Birkbeck, University of London  is offering two scholarship places to Camden residents for any of their undergraduate courses starting in October 2021. The deadline to apply is 25 June 2021.
Hult International Business School is offering Camden residents a fully-funded one-year  postgraduate Master of International Business degree – including practical experience with a social enterprise or small / medium-sized enterprise. The course starts in Sept 2021 and the deadline to apply is 21 May 2021.
Hult International Business School is offering London residents a fully-funded scholarship for a full-time, 3-4 year Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) degree. The deadline to apply is 15 Jan 2021. Full details here.

How do you get the best out of online surveys?

London Plus in partnership with Coalition for Efficiency are running a free online interactive session about designing surveys for beginners. Supported by the wider DataWise London scheme , Surveys 101: an introduction to designing better surveys will show you how to design effective surveys including tools and resources that are available.

Youth Weekend Activities on Hampstead Heath

Healthwatch Camden Hosts Online Q+A Meeting with local General Practice Staff

Wednesday 4th November 2020, 5.30pm – 6.30pm.
This event has been organised for members of the public to engage directly with Camden’s GPs and a representative of Camden Practice Managers Forum.
It will be an opportunity to share your experiences of access and care as well as shielding support and how this can be improved.
This will be a chance to ask questions about how GP services are coping with the Covid-19 lockdown, patients experience when accessing services and how we can all keep safe.  Full details here.

Domestic violence and abuse online workshop

Introduction to domestic violence and abuse e-learning
This e-learning is intended for everyone that would like to gain an awareness on domestic violence and abuse. It will provide you with an introduction to what the types and signs of abuse are, how to respond and what actions to take.

Responding to domestic violence and abuse online workshop

Camden Safety Net two-hour online workshops on responding to domestic violence and abuse for staff that come into regular contact with residents.
25th November or 15th December
This online workshop will help you become more aware of the indicators of domestic abuse and violence and more confident in what to do in these instances. The workshop will explore the dynamics of a domestic abuse situation and what the barriers are for a victim/survivor seeking help.

Employability Tutor at Elfrida Rathbone Camden

To work with young people (16 -25 years) with a learning disability at our OFSTED registered Leighton College.  The key aim of the role is to equip people with a learning disability with the skills and confidence to move towards employment.  Elfrida Rathbone Camden provides ground-breaking education programmes to just 20 students that help young disabled people to build confidence, develop employment skills, encourage independence within the local community and to release their potential.  Full details here.

How to Volunteer and How to Recruit Volunteers in Camden

Volunteer in Camden at Time to Spare.
Volunteer for the NHS at GoodSAM.
Join a neighbourhood Mutual Aid group.
Organisations that are signed up to Time to Spare can now request volunteers through a brokerage team making it much easier to access the volunteers. The brokers can help match volunteers with voluntary and community organisations who have a need for verified/ vetted volunteers. The service will also help to verify or carry out new DBS check with volunteers.
