Working for Environmental Justice
This week we’re highlight work we carried out looking at the impact of some high profile national infrastructure projects on local communities. Volunteering generates at least £4.6 billion per year to UK economy
The Royal Voluntary Service has released a report in conjunction with Pro Bono Economics, which looks at the role volunteering plays in relation to national productivity and the general economic picture. In what is pretty encouraging news for the VCS, the report analysed that the economy overall, as well as business and employees, benefit greatly from the contributions of the sector. 

Report finds general improvement on diversity in grant-making foundations
A 3 year report from the Foundation Practice Rating project, which was set up to analyse 3 key practices of charitable grant-making foundations, has found an increase in diversity, although it remains the weakest area. The report, which you can read here, also measures accountability and transparency in UK charitable foundations. 

Easyfundraising online egg hunt
Between 15th – 31st March, easyfundraising are donating £100 each day to good causes in their online Egg Hunt. Every day, the egg will be hiding in a new spot on the easyfundraising website – crack the clues for a chance to win £100 donation each day and an entry to win a further £5,000 donation too. You will need to register first with easyfundraising.

Skills Transition Fund
The Skills Transition Fund recognises a skills gap as the UK balances the challenges of securing energy and delivering its 2050 net zero target. Shell UK has created the Skills Transition Fund, which aims to invest in initiatives led by community organisations that could help people with the skills they need to get into employment. The funding put forward will go directly to UK-based non-profit projects that aim to drive tangible action and create measurable impact in local communities.

MOPAC Funding for Community Projects related to Policing and Crime Plan Priorities
Camden Safer Neighbourhood Board (CSNB) invites other Camden Community Organisations to work with them to apply for funding from MOPAC. They have around £10,000 available for between 2 and 3 projects in Camden that are related to the Police & Crime priorities.  Please see the information here.  This includes details of these Priorities and some examples of the sort of projects MOPAC funded last year. CSNB are only asking for expressions of interest at this stage.
 
Black & global majority-led groups resilience fund
Do it Now Now, in collaboration with City Bridge Foundation, is offering grants of up to £12,000 for Black and Global Majority-led organisations across Greater London to support groups to build financial resilience and operational readiness. The Innovate Now programme will support enterprise projects that can solve a problem experienced within Black and Global Majority communities, whilst bringing in trading income for the organisation that helps increase their chances of raising social investment and helps to create a sustainable future for the organisation.

Baring Foundation fund for collaborative legal action
Civil society organisations in the UK can apply now for grants of up to £150,000 over three years to use legal action collaboratively to achieve positive social change. The unrestricted grants can support hub activities which use legal action in all its forms, whether that is to empower individuals and groups, persuade public and private bodies, challenge government, or a mix of all three. The funding can be used for any costs related to the hub work, such as covering lawyers’ fees, towards the salaries of admin staff supporting hub work, or towards management costs to oversee the work.

Camden and Islington Spring 24 Volunteering Fair
Recruiting Volunteers? Book now for Volunteer Centre Camden’s Spring 2024 volunteering fair. This fair will be in person in King’s Cross on Wednesday 17th April, 12-2pm.

Free event for parents & carers of children with special educational needs & disabilities
Parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can come along to Swiss Cottage Library on Wednesday 20 March, from 10am to 1pm, to find information about support, activities and services for them and their family. Try out free wellbeing activities during taster sessions, find out about courses, workshops and activities, as well as local places that families of children with SEND can visit, especially at weekends and school holidays. This free event at Swiss Cottage Library, 88 Avenue Road, NW3, is jointly organised by Camden Adult Community Learning and Camden Libraries.

YPFI Social Action Project Launch
Young People for Inclusion are collaborating with Fitzrovia Youth in Action to deliver a social action project, supporting young people with learning difficulties and disabilities to shape their communities, boost their confidence and gain experience leading a project that delivers change around accessibility and inclusion in Camden. The project will be running every Friday evening out of Somers Town Community Association, 150 Ossulston Street, NW1 1EE, from this Friday 15th. Sessions include time for socialisation and games, before a structured activity. Contact Andy Forse make a referral and to discuss accessibility needs of young people.

Big Ideas and Pathways Workshop at Birkbeck University
‘Psychology of Spaceflight: What Happens to Human Brain and Behaviour in Space?’.
This talk is one of a series of free, thought-provoking lectures from Birkbeck. Professor Elisa Raffaella  Ferre will discuss how understanding the impact of spaceflight on the human body and brain has never been more important. Elisa will discuss her findings on how behaviour changes during spaceflight. March 18th, the Living Centre, 6.30pm.

Want support with deciding what to do next and how to get there? Unsure of what job you’d be good at? Pathways offers free advice and training! Join this session for the enjoyable and interactive workshop which includes a free lunch.

NEW Health Walk on Hampstead Heath – Thursdays 11am
Heath Hands is expanding its programme of regular FREE Health Walks on Hampstead Heath, with a new walk meeting at 10.50 for an 11am start at the Parliament Hill Café every Thursday. No need to book, just turn up,  find friendly volunteer walk leaders in hi vis and join the walk! Suitable for all abilities, including those new to walking. Can’t make Thursdays? Talk for Health Free Taster Session 
This free taster session from Talk for Health is designed to explore the true connection that happens when we let go of our social masks and start being who we really are. Focusing on, among others, open and truthful talking and empathic listening, you can also learn more about the peer to peer counselling network run by TFH.

VAC – Freelance WordPress Technical Consultant 
We are hiring! VAC are looking for a technical consultant with a solid background of providing expert technical assistance on WordPress, who, ideally, is familiar working with charities. The position is freelance, on an ad-hoc basis and would probably require 1-3 days/month, depending on need. This will vary from month-month. Main responsibilities include helping the organisation with technical troubleshooting and routine maintenance jobs. Please send a copy of your CV including, your day rate to alexcharles@vac.org.uk. 

Part-time Community Engagement Worker

Camden Federation of Private Tenants are looking for somebody who is enthusiastic, creative and likes working with a wide variety of people out in the community. This 3 day a week role involves working with the Origin Tenants’ Voices (OTV) project to actively engage with and listen to more local residents about their concerns relating to their housing and other changes taking place in the area.

Castlehaven out-of-hours caretaker
Are you a Camden resident looking for an out-of-hours role? Castlehaven are looking for a local out-of-hours caretaker (zero-hours contract) to manage early morning, evening, and weekend bookings. From opening and closing buildings to greeting hirers and setting up furniture, the ideal candidate will be flexible and adaptable, have previous experience working in a public-facing role and have knowledge of health and safety regulations. Applications close on the 31st of March.

Generalist Advisor at Camden Disability Action

Camden Disability Action is recruiting a new Generalist Advisor (Welfare Benefits) who is committed to learning more about the Social Model of Disability and you will share our vision for a radically inclusive world where people with differences are never Disabled by the society in which they live.

Volunteer needed at Scotscare
Scotscare, the charity that supports Scots in need in London, is seeing a volunteer to cater for our popular choir.  This involves 2 hours a week, 4.30-6.30pm Mondays in term time, preparing and serving food to around 20 clients who sing in the choir. Mind in Camden are undertaking ground-breaking partnership projects that work alongside people, organisations and communities to make positive changes in mental health. Caretaker/ Cleaner at St Pancras Community Association

Camden Council Active for Life campaign
Camden Council has launched Active for Life, a 12 week behaviour change campaign to support adults aged 60 and over to build more physical activity into their daily routines. The campaign will showcase the wide range of free and low cost physical activities for over 60s – from walking groups and gardening sessions to kayaking and team sports. The first 500 Camden residents over 60 to join will receive a free one-day pass to use at any of Camden’s Better Leisure Centres. 

New Camden Mental Health Core Teams Reference Group
Are you a current or previous service-user of the Camden Core Teams? Or the carer of someone who has accessed the service?  A new group for service-users and carers is launching, to work with staff and think about how to shape and improve the service! No previous experience needed! The group will run monthly, between March and October 2024. The first meeting will be online, on Monday 27th March at 10.30am. Reward and recognition payments are offered to anyone joining this group, £25 per meeting. You can find an expression of interest form here. Camden Faith & Belief Community Awards
Camden Council in partnership with The Faith & Belief Forum (F&BF) have announced their very first Camden Faith & Belief Community Awards. The awards will spotlight and celebrate the contribution of unsung faith and community projects, as well as individuals, who contribute selflessly to their local communities to foster understanding, unity and positive change. The awards seek to recognise those who have gone above and beyond in promoting these values, making a significant impact on the lives of local residents. Nominations are now open until Sunday 14 April, with the award ceremony is set to take on Thursday 23 May.

Nominations open for the Sally Joseph Award
Together with the Mayor of Camden, the Council is seeking nominations for the third annual Sally Joseph Award, which recognises an individual or team who have made an outstanding contribution to services for children looked after in the borough. The award is named after Sally, who was Camden Council’s Head of Service for Children’s Care Provision, and sadly passed away in 2021 after working for the Council for 37 years. The Sally Joseph Award, which includes a £1,000 grant to further the work for which the winner has been recognised, acknowledges excellent practice in how the Council and partners look after children in care. Nominations are open until 17 June.

Report on UK Poverty in 2024

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation have released a new report which analyses poverty across the UK, as well as the outlook on the future picture. The report looks into which groups are most affected by high poverty levels, and suggests a number of ways in which the problem might be tackled.

Research indicates charities subsidise public spending to tune of £2.4bn a year
In a survey by New Philanthropy Capital, 62% of charity leaders said that their organisation had had to use alternative funding sources to deliver public services they are contracted for. The survey also revealed that a majority of the public (59%) want government to work in partnership with charities more.

New Age UK report on the health and care of over 50s
Encompassing the cost of living crisis, the impact of Covid-19 and a range of other ongoing health and care issues, this report from Age UK offers a sobering and comprehensive look at the challenges facing those aged 50 and over.

Croydon charity urgently seeking help finding a new home

 The Cassandra Centre, a charity offering counselling, education and support particularly to women who have been impacted by domestic violence, is now without a home for almost a year after losing their previous base. The enforced switch means support can now only be offered virtually or from public or temporary spaces, limiting the ways in which help can be given to those in need.

Camden Community Infrastructure Levy
Used to re-distribute funds generated from new developments back into the community, this local levy is open to a wide range of projects related to social and physical infrastructure. For more information on how to apply, as well as assessment criteria, have a look at this helpful guide from the council.

The Community Ownership Fund
The Community Ownership Fund is a £150 million fund over 4 years to support community groups across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to take ownership of assets which are at risk of being lost to the community.

Shell UK Skills Transition Fund 
This fund aims to invest in initiatives led by community organisations that could help people with the skills they need to get into employment, with a focus on the 2035 energy transition. The scheme will award grants between £5,000 – £10,000 per project. You can apply here, and there are also 2 drop in sessions which you can attend, on 28th February and 6th March.

Young Camden Foundation Supplementary Education fund
Dedicated to providing core cost support for supplementary schools and out-of-school settings associated with organisations actively delivering in Camden. Applications are invited from such organisations with a strong emphasis on providing core thematic learning experiences to children and young people.

The Zen Project and Mind in Camden bring to you one of a series of monthly festivals to celebrate mental health and support the local Camden community. Online Criminology Taste Course from Birkbeck University
This free 5 week course from Birkbeck University will introduce you to Criminology – the study of crime, those who commit it, and how we respond to it. Aimed at those with an interest in Criminology who would like to study that subject at university and designed for those who have had a break from education.

SPCA Comedy & Curry night

Full Talk for Health Peer Counselling Skills Programme
Talk for Health are hosting a number of events to introduce people to their counselling programme, which teaches the skills of authentic talking, empathic listening and managing a group. This enables graduates to go on and join or set up their own ongoing groups for connection and wellbeing. The course opens on Saturday 2nd March. Find out more information here.

Part time Guest Co-ordinator at Touch Project

The Touch Project are looking for a reliable, trustworthy, local person, ideally with a DBS, who would like one hours work on Thursday evenings at the Old Diorama Arts Centre, from 6-7pm each week. Workshop on the draft new Camden Local Plan 
On Thursday 7th March, the council are holding a workshop for disabled residents to discuss the draft new Camden Local Plan – the council’s main planning document, which provides the framework for managing development in the borough. BSL Interpreters and Captions/ Speech to Text support are being booked for this meeting at the Crowndale Centre, NW1 1BD. NPC System Practice Toolkit
This new toolkit from New Philanthropy Capital offers a series of different tools to help charities approach and face problems with systematic thinking. You can also join their event on 24th April for a demonstration on using two of these tools. 

Combatting social isolation with Steps to Togetherness
Steps to Togetherness is an initiative that aims to build community connections, encourage workplace inclusivity, and recognise the political nature of building diverse social networks, and consequently decrease levels of loneliness and social isolation. They have also launched a manual with practical steps and ideas for individuals and community leaders to achieve these goals.

CharityComms AI Hub
Featuring tips, tools and resources for using AI effectively in the charity sector, this wide-ranging hub is a continually developing place for non-profits to visit to learn how to use AI to their advantage.

Apply to become a Love Camden Advisor
Camden council are looking for 10 new advisors on a new cultural programme to celebrate the borough. Aimed at bringing communities together, advisors will live or work in Camden who are passionate about developing and showcasing local identity.

VAC is welcoming WE RESTART as one of our newest member organisations and part of our Camden New Groups Network. 

WE RESTART is a new charity empowering community through creative arts. In Autumn 2023, they opened the A.R.I.A. (Asylum seeker, Refugee and Immigrant Artists) Hub, a dedicated space to nurture the talents and potential of artists-at-risks. It offers comprehensive, long-term support that is crucial for building sustainable careers in the arts. 

Cristina Antonini is the Co-founder of WE RESTART. She says: 

“The A.R.I.A. Hub is a studio residency here at our office in High Holborn, where 7 selected artists share their experience and develop their career in the arts. Together they are also developing a project to showcase during the next edition of the Refugee Week. WE RESTART are among organisations participating in the Mayor of London’s program Skills for Londoners. We help asylum seekers and refugees in enrolling to ESOL, Math and Digital Skills courses with AEB providers / London Multiply. We do so working from hotel accommodations (more specifically in Brent) to engage directly with potential students. We would like to bring our experience also to Camden and support the asylum seekers staying in hotels in the borough. 
 

Our program encompasses the provision of tools and materials, mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities. We firmly believe that by nurturing the talent and creativity of asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrant artists, we preserve their artistic identities – priceless assets in their journeys to rebuild their lives and extraordinary gifts to the communities where they have found refuge.”

Implementation of the Charities Act 2022 

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced that the provisions in the next tranche of Charities Act 2022 reforms are likely to come into force in March 2024. This will include changes to align the rules on amending governing documents of different types of charity, a new Charity Commission power to confirm trustee appointments, changes in relation to mergers that are registered with the Commission and some more technical measures.

New film invites rethink of charitable spending
Charities should not be afraid of approaching projects like profitable businesses, argues the creator of a new film about the charity sector. A recent screening of the film Uncharitable discussed some of the themes of the film, examining the scrutiny placed on charity spending, and questions whether it lowers ambition and is harmful to long term goals.

Arts Council England updates guidance on political statements
Amid a passionate reaction to warnings from ACE on political statements, the organisation have announced an update to their guidance. Commentators expressed concern of censorship and have emphasised the importance of political art.

Strike action called off at English National Opera
Negotiations between the ENO and the Musician’s Union have resulted in a planned strike, the first in 44 years, being called off. The strike was announced after ENO introduced new employment terms for musicians, due to funding threats.

Active Spaces Fund accepting applications for 2024
London Marathon Foundation is offering grants of between £10,000 and £80,000 for not-for-profit groups, community enterprises, local authorities, statutory bodies, and schools across London to deliver projects and activities that engage the least active children, young people, and underserved communities to lead healthier and more active lives. More information about the Active Spaces fund here.

Jerwood Foundation spring 2024 funding round
UK-based organisations that focus on making art available for public benefit and promoting emerging talent in the arts have until 1 March 2024 to apply to Jerwood Foundation’s Spring funding round.
Up to £2 million is available per year to support a variety of projects and activities that promote the arts for public benefit.

Intheloop fund for boosting recycling
Funding is available to support projects in Great Britain to introduce or improve recycling points in high footfall public spaces. In 2024, the Hubbub UK #InTheLoop Grant Fund is seeking to award up to two projects a £12,500 grant to invest in, and boost, recycling facilities. Projects will also receive ongoing light-touch support from Hubbub, as well as support from an external measurement partner and £1,000 to boost their campaign communications.

London Catalyst partners for health grants
London Catalyst, working in partnership with the Hospital Saturday Fund, is offering grants of between £3,000 and £15,000 for charitable organisations across London that wish to offer a new approach or thoughtful development of service for people experiencing significant barriers to health, in partnership with an expert health agency/provider.

The Ethical Property Foundation are hosting a webinar on 23rd April, with experienced surveyors and property advisers, to support the UK voluntary sector. Attendees will find out about the finances and risks of property management, looking after tenants and what makes a greener workplace, as well as understanding the principles of effective maintenance management. Community Climate Action day 
Join Camden’s sustainability team on 2nd March to connect with residents and local organisations taking action on the climate crisis, and see how you can get involved. There are a range of iniatives and opportunities you can get get involved with and benefit from, including workshops on food redistribution and community engagement. A beginner’s guide to AI in the third sector
In this session on March 14th, hear from National Trust and Charities Aid Foundation on how they are amplifying their employee productivity and accelerating their digital transformation with AI. Employability Programme for Autistic Adults
Camden Autism Pathways to Employment is a five week programme designed to revolutionise the employment landscape for autistic individuals, equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to pursue their career goals with competence and determination. Participants will receive hands-on guidance in crafting professional CVs and cover letters, ensuring they can effectively showcase their qualifications and skills. How Digital Funding is changing in 2024

The Catalyst have conducted an in-depth analysis on expectations around funding for digital costs over the coming year. The article is based on interviews with people working for UK grantmakers, and their thoughts on how digital funding continues to develop, the focus for funders and how some lack confidence in assessing funding applications.

Donations not reaching charities most in need 
Studies by think tank Centre for Cities show a mismatch between charitable giving and areas of greatest need. Their report investigates the geography of charitable giving in the UK, and whether charitable donations could be redistributed to better support areas most in need. 

Charity Interns pilot for over 50s
A new pilot scheme from Charity Interns is aimed at encouraging over 50s, who face barriers to finding VCS opportunities, to transition into the voluntary sector. Supported by a number of partners, including Age UK and the British Heart Foundation, paid internship positions have been created as a stepping stone for people aged over 50, or those who have taken a career break, to work for a charity.

Free webinar on accessing funding
Does your community organisation need additional funds? A free webinar on February 22nd will show charitable organisations how they can receive free unrestricted funding in 2024 through the funding platform Easyfundraising. The webinar is suitable for anyone involved in fundraising for good causes of all shapes and sizes including voluntary groups, CICs, social enterprises, churches, schools, sports clubs and charities. GLL Sport Foundation Awards 2024 
Talented young athletes from 65 areas across the UK are invited to apply for a range of support, including financial help, access to sports facilities, physiotherapy, lifestyle mentoring and mental health aid. Now in its 15th year, the GLL Sport Foundation has so far contributed over £14m and distributed 26,000 awards to support young talented athletes on their sporting journey. Successful applicants will be given access to the 250 sport and leisure facilities across the UK operated by GLL under its ‘Better’ trading brand. Applications are open until 20 February 2024.

Barclays Community Football Fund Opens
Barclays Bank in partnership with the Sported Foundation is offering grants to not-for-profit organisations operating in an area of high deprivation to support delivery of their football activities to engage with young people (under the age of 25 years) from underrepresented groups. This is an access grant which aims to help improve access to football for all. 

Supplementary Education Fund Webinar
YCF and John Lyon’s Charity are delighted to announce that the Supplementary Education fund has returned for 2024! The application window has recently opened and closes on 23rd February. This webinar will help you to fully understand whether this grant is right for your organisation and you will be able to ask questions. For further information and guidance relating to this fund, please click here.

Wellbeing Open Day at CAWH – 17th February
Everyone is welcome to try out a wide range of activites and fitness taster sessions for free, at the Community Association for West Hampstead. The event is open to everyone, both young and old, and no booking is required. Just come along on the day and have a go at some of the activities that CAWH offers at the centre. 

How to talk freely about your culture
Author, business mentor and trainer Sharon McLean will be reading from her book at Kilburn Library on 19th February. The event hopes to inspire and help people talk freely about their own culture and how to write their story with confidence.

Sector Spotlight: Families 4 Peace

Families4Peace is a grassroots organisation that began with a desire to create a community project that addressed the inequity in London. In 2021, a couple of north west London secondary school friends were looking for a way to make an impact on their community. As they were busy organising their project, the conflict in Ukraine unfolded.

Recognising the gravity of the crisis, the teens quickly appealed to their families, schools, and peers to help address this crisis which would ultimately bring more than 100,000 Ukrainian refugees to the United Kingdom.

In response to the crisis, Families4Peace collaborated with VAC and Camden council to host a community event to disseminate information to Ukrainians in the Camden area. More than 150 Ukrainian families attended.

In early May 2022, the Families4Peace community centre opened its doors at The Cavendish School to hundreds of newly arriving Ukrainian families. Running by-weekly community hubs and information support, organise more community events including family cooking sessions, prep support for school aged children and after school activities for the many secondary school children in our network.

There are many opportunities to get involved with Families4Peace. They need volunteers to help run their community centre, manage their social media presence, organise fundraisers and help with translation and ESOL courses.

Funding needed to meet living wage requirement

The SCVO, a charity umbrella body in Scotland has urged the government to increase funding to public sector grants and contracts, after the announcement last year that charities would be required to pay the living wage to all staff.

Changes to laws on charities returning objects overseas
The Charities Act of 2022 is due to be amended for clarification around transferring legal ownership of an object to its country of origin. You can read the letter from DCMS to the Charity Commission here. 

Laamiga announce annual report
Lammiga are a charity that provides support and tools to empower and enable women from minority ethnic, migrant and refugee backgrounds to reach their full potential. You can read their annual report here.

Origin Housing Community Fund
Local community groups and organisations have the opportunity to secure up to £2,000 Community Grant funding. This funding will be invested in projects that make a difference to Origin’s communities as part of their vision to build strong communities where people can thrive. If you’d like to enquire about the Origin Housing Community Fund, please contact them by email.

Future Camden Fund for small businesses
Small businesses in Camden with fewer than 50 employees can apply for loans or Match Trading grants that come with a package of support. Black and female owned organisations are particularly encouraged to apply. See the criteria and submit your application here.

Carbon Emissions Reduction Fund
The Energy Savings Trust is offering grants to not-for-profit groups for projects that empower householders to reduce their carbon emissions and engage positively with the transition to net zero.
Deadline for applications is 20 February 2024.

Beacon Lodge Charitable Trust 
For organisations that promote the care, safety and upbringing of children in greater London, Beacon Lodge provides financial support in the form of grants to registered charities. New Applications for 2024 will open on the 31st January 2024 and close on the 15th March 2024 – you can submit your application here.

Free Saturday Club with Roundhouse and The Place
Young people aged 13-16 can join the Performance and Theatre Saturday Club at the Roundhouse, and develop their dance and circus skills with professional artists.
Every Saturday they will explore contemporary and creative dance techniques, and learn acrobatics, parkour, and juggling. No previous circus or dance experience is necessary. They can learn to balance, flip and improve their co-ordination, guided by professional tutors, while working towards a final performance piece. This is a unique opportunity to meet other young people and develop performance skills in a fun and supportive environment. 

Digital Information Skills Workshop

3 New roles at Hillside Clubhouse
Hillside Clubhouse are launching a brand new community café from Highgate East inpatients facility.  Aiming to make the café a warm, safe and supportive destination for the whole community, not just patients and visitors, this is an incredibly exciting opportunity to grow and develop a community café and tackle stigmas associated with mental ill health.  The team will be instrumental in the success of the café. Rethinking Masculinities with Beyond Equality
Beyond Equality are partnering with Movember to offer community groups across London the opportunity to participate in a free three-part workshop series supporting men aged 18+ to chat in their community about mental wellbeing, healthy masculinity and how to build supportive communities. They are looking for community groups that work with men to reach out and get involved. Community groups need to provide between 6-20 participants, the space and AV equipment. Workshops can take place until September 2024.

Integrate is a social enterprise committed to repurposing vacant office spaces by partnering with charitable organisations. Integrate matches landlords with charities aligned with causes they are passionate about, offering them rent-free workspace in a vacant central London property. Charities pay a fixed £250 monthly contribution to bills, and should have 3+ people working from the space and for a minimum of 3 days a week. 

North London environmental survey
The NLWA are running a research study about environmental behaviours, to help inform their work in the region. Local residents can share their thoughts and be in with the chance of winning a £250 Love to Shop voucher here.

We are launching a new feature in our newsletter, in which we spotlight the work of a particular charity we have been working with or that has been brought to our attention recently. This week, we want to celebrate Somers Town Museum.
In the words of our Health Transformation and Partnership Development Manager, Donna:

“Voluntary Action Camden has supported the development of the Somers Town Museum since its inception as a local History Club celebrating the radical history of the neighbourhood. We have also worked with the Museum to co-deliver a training session on setting up a Community Interest Company (CIC) and promote the Museum to residents looking for opportunities to get involved in community projects through social prescribing referrals.
Led, run, and developed by residents and other volunteers the project has grown into a successful Community Interest Company, and now has shop front premises on Phoenix Road in the heart of Somers Town. An astonishing range of activities and opportunities to get involved are on offer for residents – it is a tiny space with huge ambitions!”

There is so much to discover at the Somers Town Museum…  some of their recent work involved hunting down and bringing home some of the famous Gilbert Bayes sculptures that disappeared from St Pancras Housing estates (now Origin Housing). Labour outline vision for charity sector

At the Labour and Civil Society Summit, Keir Starmer pledged to reset the relationship between government and civil society if his party are elected. The speech called for a “society of service” and was received by charity leaders and shadow ministers. UK Fundraising has more information.

Do you know Camden’s next Youth MP?
Young people across Camden go to the polls from 15-26 April 2024 to elect a new Camden Youth MP and two Deputy Youth MPs. The roles will have a two-year term and be the voice for Camden young people, putting forward their views at a local level but also at a regional and national level through the UK Youth Parliament, run by the British Youth Council.
Young people aged 13 to 19 who wish to stand as candidates can apply before 5pm on Sunday, 25 February by filling in the form in this candidates pack.

Love Camden Cultural Education Fund
This fund enables Camden-based cultural organisations to deliver cultural education and learning projects that promote engagement in free to access high-quality cultural experiences for young people in the borough, through grants of up to £25,000 per project.
Deadline: 2nd February

Disability Justice Fund 
DDPOs (Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations) are eligble to apply for the Disability Justice Fund, which aims to stimulate disability related campaigning or movement building. Two streams of funding are available for organisations that meet the relevant criteria. You can apply here.
Deadline: March 4, 5pm.

Flexible Finance Fund for Black & Racially Minoritised Groups
The Flexible Finance Fund intends to help groups grow or take on assets and become more resilient. It will provide £4 million of funding and support to 15-25 Black and Racially Minoritised charities and social enterprises based in England who are improving people’s lives, or the environment they live in. New Grants Programme from British Ecological Society
Projects involved in delivering independent outreach, public engagement and science communication activities that engage public audiences with the excitement, importance and relevance of ecological science can apply for funding.
The lead applicant must have a BES membership.

Lighthouse Project Showcase
Come and celebrate Wipers 10th year at Earth in Hackney, with performances from young artists, rappers and singers, many of whom will be taking the stage for the first time as part of the Lighthouse Project Showcase. UK Community Engagement Training Day

Full Talk for Health Peer Counselling Skills Programme
Talk for Health are hosting a number of events to introduce people to their counselling programme, which teaches the skills of authentic talking, empathic listening and managing a group. Digital Information Skills Workshop

Celebrating Trustees’ across Camden – Annual thank you event coming soon!!!

Camden trustees are integral to the local VSCE and critical to the quality of community service provision in the borough. They devote time, energy and effort, for free, to  help thousands of charities and community groups across Camden. Our annual celebration event is a chance to give back to our trustees and say a huge thank you for all the hard work they do. It’s also a chance for trustees to come together, meet new faces and discover new connections in the borough.

Operational challenges are bringing charities to capacity

The Charities Aid Foundation has carried out research on capacity levels at non-profit organisations, and found that many are struggling to continue delivering services to the people that need them, and some are turning people away. This comes amid news that charities and charitable services are more in demand than ever. Full article here. 

Substantial funds lost due to lack of Gift Aid contributions
Studies have found that charities are losing out on re-claiming significant amounts of income tax back through Gift Aid, as only around half of donors claim it when giving contributions. YouGov surveyed more than 6,300 donors between January and November last year.

Charities nationwide can take part in the London Marathon
Organisers of the London Marathon are introducing a new DIY way of taking part this year. charities can recruit participants from their wider supporter databases to complete the distance in their own way, and raise money without having to come to London. Find out more here.

Berkeley Foundation’s 2023-24 Resilience Fund
Applications are now open to Berkley Foundation’s Resilience Fund. They are looking to support up to six organisations working with young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and who face multiple layers of discrimination and inequality. Successful organisations will receive up to £60,000 over two years to build organisational resilience. Please note they are unable to consider applications for frontline delivery.
The deadline for applications is 2 February 2024 (5pm).

Greene King IPA Reopens Proud To Pitch In Fund
Grants of up to £4,000 are available for registered charities, community groups, social enterprises, community amateur sports clubs, and other organisations across the UK to deliver grassroots sports activities that positively impact local communities. Funded projects should be delivered by 31 December 2024. Find out more.
The deadline for applications is 1 November 2024. 

Funding to Improve Digital Infrastructure
Bloomberg Philanthropies is offering grants of up to £150,000 over two-years for cultural organisations to strengthen their digital infrastructure and help grow revenue, increase fundraising, engage audiences, and improve operations. Not-for-profit cultural organisations that have been in operation for at least three years and had a turnover of at least £500,000 in the 2023 financial year can apply for digital infrastructure projects here.
The deadline for applications is 13 March 2023.

Volunteering Infrastructure in Health and Care Systems
CW+, in partnership with NHS Charities Together and NHS England, is offering approximately 15 grants of between £150,000 and £500,000 over three years for partnerships of NHS and VCSE organisations. The fund is aimed at building capability through the development of volunteering infrastructure to improve the experience and outcomes of people using health and care systems. The deadline for Phase One applications is 23 February 2024.

Free dementia information sessions for Camden groups
Over 920,000 people in the UK are living with dementia – a number expected to rise to over a million by this year – and we can all make a difference to people living with dementia in the communities we serve.

Dementia Friends sessions are a free, quick and easy way for your staff team and volunteers to learn more about what dementia is, how it affects a person and what your group or organisation can do to make a difference for people with dementia in the community.  We also have a Guide to Dementia Services in Camden leaflet in Bengali, Somali, Arabic and English for groups to take away. Free paddlesport sessions at The Pirate Castle 
Camden boating charity, The Pirate Castle, is offering free kayaking, canoeing, fun and adventure on the Regent’s Canal for 8 to 17-year-olds. These free sessions are ideal for beginners, and will run on Sundays from 4 February until 27 October 2024 (including school holidays). They will run from The Pirate Castle, Gilbey’s Wharf, NW1 7EA. Targeted at young Londoners aged 8 to 17 who meet Go! London’s eligibility criteria, pre-booking is essential.
The Pirate Castle is also offering a limited number of free introductory paddlesport sessions for state schools and voluntary groups from across London throughout 2024.

Celebrating Trustees’ across Camden – Annual thank you event coming soon!!!

Camden trustees are integral to the local VSCE and critical to the quality of community service provision in the borough. They devote time, energy and effort, for free, to  help thousands of charities and community groups across Camden. Our annual celebration event is a chance to give back to our trustees and say a huge thank you for all the hard work they do. It’s also a chance for trustees to come together, meet new faces and discover new connections in the borough.
Keep an eye out for a date, likely to be in Feb (don’t worry, we will post it in the newsletter and in our Trustee Network email group!).

Human Rights
The British Institute of Human Rights has a new London-based human rights programme in partnership with Just Fair. The programme aims to develop the use of human rights-based approaches for voluntary organisations. To start, they are running a number of open days.

Social Prescribing Report by NAVCA 
Learning from social prescribing is the latest report by NAVCA, looking at how to improve the social prescribing system. Local Infrastructure Organisations (LIOs) support VCSE organisations in the social prescribing ecosystem in a range of ways including through capacity building and community development; building partnerships; commissioning, contracting and providing quality assurance; and hosting Link Workers.

NAVCA Vision for Volunteering Theme Conference – Power

The Vision for Volunteering is a 10 year collaborative project, with the aim of improving volunteering by 2032.Through our research we have identified five key focus themes:

Unclaimed Healthy Start Vouchers – Making a Healthy Start Application
Almost £4,000 of Healthy Start vouchers go unclaimed every week in Camden and recent data from Hackey shows that uptake of Healthy Start vitamins was as low as 20% in 2022. These vitamins can be incredibly beneficial to support healthy development. For example, taking folic acid supplements pre-pregnancy can reduce the risk of neural tube defects. If someone needs support, get in touch with Camden Council at one of their local children’s centres or calling 0800 731 0232 or 0800 389 5789. Alternatively call the NHS Healthy Start helpline on 0300 330 7010.

Closure of Household Support Fund
The current Household Support Fund closes on 31 March 2024. The government is yet to make a decision on whether the fund will be renewed beyond then. As part of their work to gather evidence to convince central government to continue the fund for another year, the LGA are conducting a short online survey on the level of demand for the fund, the impact of the fund ending on local welfare provision, and how the fund could be improved if it were to be extended. Whilst the survey is targeted at councils that administer the fund, voluntary and community partners are being encouraged to respond and answer the questions only relevant to them. The survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. If you want to contribute, the deadline for responses is 5pm on Friday 19th January.

Lloyds Bank Foundation’s Specialist Funding Programme  Deadline Reminder
Small, local, specialist frontline charities who are supporting people facing complex issues in England and Wales have until 25 January 2024 to submit their application for tailored development support and a three-year unrestricted grant of £75,000. This funding is not available for Community Interest Companies, or any other organisations that are not charities or CIOs registered in England and Wales, hospices, rescue services or ‘umbrella organisations. The deadline for applications is 25 January 2024 (17:00).                        Lloyds Bank Foundation’s Specialist Funding Programme – Deadline Reminder

Comic Relief Announces New UK Fund in February 2024
Comic Relief has given advanced notice that it ‘expects to launch a new funding opportunity in February for organisations that are supporting refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and/or who are doing influencing work for safer routes and improved outcomes for people affected. This will be for organisations that are already working in this area. Further details about the new grant will be provided as soon as they become available.

British Gas Energy Trust Accepting Applications

British Gas Energy Trust is an independent charitable body set up to support those who are struggling to pay their bills, regardless of energy provider. The Individuals and Families Fund is intended to tackle fuel poverty by clearing the energy debts of struggling households and respond to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Grants to cover arrears of up to £1,500 will be credited to the energy account of eligible households.The fund is available to BG and Non-BG customers with debt on a credit energy account or those on a pre-payment meter. Please note that suppliers with their own support fund are excluded from this fund: Boost, Eon, Eon Next, EDF, Scottish Power, Ovo, Octopus, SSE and Utilita. The Fund is expected to close at the end of March 2024 (unless all the funding is allocated sooner). The Winch is a charity that has been working with young people in Camden and nearby areas since 1973. We are currently seeking new tenants for our two office spaces located in Swiss Cottage. Office furniture and fittings donation/ reuse opportunity:
An office building in central London (Green Park station) is planning full internal redesign, and offers used office furniture and fittings, which are all in good condition, to local non profit institutions such as schools, retirement homes, council, refugee centres, immigration offices, a designated charity, etc. The offer is on a  “First come first served basis”. Self collection and self dismount if needed.
Viewings 10am-16pm work days.
