Black Lives Matter & Covid-19 BAME Disparities

Camden organisations are united in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign. As a response to the events of recent weeks and to the publication of the report around 35 other national infrastructure leaders  have signed and published a statement of intent. Voice4Change and ACEVO this week published ‘Home Truths: undoing racism and delivering real diversity in the charity sector’. If you need some inspiration to take your own action then take a look at these resources put together by Castlehaven or some we’ve collected from Shake, Anti Racism Resources and It’s Nice That . Camden Council will be reviewing statues and the naming of streets and public places.  Learn about decolonizing the curriculum or take the free 6 week University of Exeter course on British Imperialism.

The next Voluntary Action Forum, on Wednesday 1st July will focus on the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on the BAME Community & Health Inequalities.  The council will be sharing the work that they have done on the issue. This will be a chance to have your say and feed into the findings. We will then be looking at the next steps and how to take this important work forward. Register here.

Financial Impact of Covid-19 on Camden VCS

Voluntary and Community groups across Camden have risen to the challenge of supporting residents and communities during the crisis, particularly those who are most vulnerable through health or isolation. Yet many groups have no or very limited funding or other income to carry out these activities and there is a risk to ongoing sustainability beyond Covid-19.In May 2020,VAC surveyed the sector to build a detailed picture of the current situation on the ground and to identify future risks to ongoing sustainability and service delivery in Camden. A key outcome of the survey is to identify future support needs for the sector and how VAC can best take forward and advocate for continuing support for the sector in both the short and mid-long term. The findings of this survey were discussed at the Camden Voluntary Action Forum meeting on 3 June 2020. Comments from participants have been incorporated into this report.

Rush In Ballet

Ballet is a good challenge that will lift your spirits. As well as all of the benefits that come with pursuing a craft and with exercise, it is good to see some friendly faces and experience the camaraderie that we all so badly need.
Don’t worry if you feel shy, everyone is welcome regardless of level or how you may be feeling at the moment. You can turn your own camera on or off, so you can either just follow along or get feedback from me if you want it.
You may even find Zoom classes less pressure than being in the studio, as you can disappear from the screen anytime you like to have a rest.

SHP Camden Recovery Service & Islington Aftercare

We are here to support Camden and Islington residents who are in recovery from substance use issues. We help individuals to explore their education, training, volunteering and employment goals and work with them to develop a personal plan to help achieve them.
Whilst our Camden Square offices are currently closed, we are still available to offer tailored 1:1 support via telephone and online. In addition our clients will have access to our online group programmes which include a weekly women’s group, recovery group and personal development workshops.
Within the service we have a team of Peer Mentors, who use their lived experience of overcoming substance use issues to support our clients along their recovery journeys. We are always keen to hear from individuals who have been abstinent from problematic substance use for over 6 months and are interested in becoming a Peer Mentor Volunteers themselves.
For more information about any of the above please contact 020 7520 8682, camdenrecoveryservice@shp.org.uk or islingtonaftercare@shp.org.uk.

May Day Greetings

Ironically in the year when workers’ contribution to society has never been more obvious there will be no May Day this year.  The May Day bank holiday has been switched from Monday 4th to Friday 8th May.  The switch was made by Royal Proclamation after many diaries had gone to press so printed diaries may be wrong.  The switch was intended to commemorate VE Day with street parties, pub toasts and bell ringing, but due to social distancing these have been cancelled (the only other time May Day was switched was also to commemorate VE Day in 1995).   Torriano Meeting house is still celebrating May Day with poems from Camden poet, Dinah Livingston – Commons and Rety.

Camden Social Prescribing and Care Navigation update

Social Prescribing and Care Navigation delivered by Age UK Camden, Voluntary Action Camden and Wish+ is operational, and adapted, as a point of access to services and support during the COVID 19 emergency.
We are aiming to connect residents with emerging support in their local areas where there is appropriate provision.
If local community organisations are contacted by residents with more complex needs than they can support please refer to Community Links and we will work with the Care Navigation and Wish+ teams to find the support needed. Referral form can be found here. Minimum requirements are contact details and permission to contact the person needing support.
All the usual routes in to the service apply via Community Links at VAC:
Freephone: 0800 193 6067 (please leave a message if no answer. Staff are using other phones to call back and keep this one free)

Voluntary Action Camden Spring 2020 Update to Members and Subscribers

Spring 2020 Update to Members and Subscribers

24th April 2020

Camden Covid-19 Special

The streets may be empty but for many it’s never been a busier time as local organisations and community groups step up to respond to residents in need.

Funding

The council has put £100,000 into an emergency fund that was distributed by Camden Giving last week.  Camden Giving raised an additional £200,000.  A further funding round is planned for June.  Groups are also accessing Community Infrastructure Levy funds at ward level (talk to your councillors).
London Funders have come together to create an Emergency Response Fund.  Wave 2 has 2 strands – Crisis Response and Delivering Differently.
We have links to many other funds but they are all being flooded with requests.
The extra funding that the chancellor announced will be distributed through the lottery – we should hear more any day now.
Sector leaders are still pressing for the furlough scheme to allow furloughed staff to volunteer for their own organisation.
Clarity is needed around business rates grants – some charities may qualify.

New VCS Forum

The first Camden Voluntary Action Forum was held on Wednesday and the participants voted to hold another in a fortnight’s time on Wednesday 6th May at 11am.  There was a chance for everyone to share an update.  VAC’s update covered our work, how the council is responding and mention of social prescribing.  Take a look here.

Voluntary and Community Groups Respond

Many organisations have stepped up to respond to the crisis. Age UK Camden and London Irish Centre were quick to mobilise and have been ensuring that vulnerable older people are getting food parcels.
VAC has put together a Covid-19 Community Directory from your updates; We have also created a daily update page and resources pages.
The Community Directory shows how many local organisations have changed the way they work in order to support vulnerable residents during the crisis.
The Care Navigation and Social Prescribing system in Camden (Community Links run by VAC and Care Navigators run by AUC and Wish+ by the council) has been taking many more referrals from both GPs, self-referrals, and from concerned family members.
We are working with the Council, Volunteer Centre Camden and others to help local organisations access all the volunteers who have signed up to help.
The Food banks have been stretched to supply demand and over the Easter weekend the Red Cross restocked Camden Foodbanks that were running low.
So many local voluntary organisations and community groups have been active in support of their local community that they are too numerous to mention here. Rest assured that the sector’s swift response has been noted at national level.

Needs of Organisations

As part of the survey of how organisations have responded we also asked for support needs.  The key concerns were
• Time is of the essence
• Clear information needed
• Contact points and referral pathways
• Payments and money
• The digital divide
• Isolation, stress, burn out, bereavement, separation
Read the full report here.

Do keep us abreast of your plans for the coming weeks

Thank you for everything you’re doing!
